Wins Oscar

Oscar0 Comments

Douglas wins the Best Actor Academy Award for his portrayal of “Greed is good” corporate raider Gordon Gekko in Oliver Stone’s Wall Street (1987). Douglas:

A large part of this award belongs to Oliver Stone. And not only as the director, but having the courage to cast me in a part that not many people thought I could play. So I’ll always be eternally grateful to him for that. And as a writer, Oliver, with Stanley Weiser, wrote a part that was the best part that I’ve ever had in my career.

Douglas gives interview to Elle about the closest he has come to a real life fatal attraction.

Stage 4 cancer

TV Appearance0 Comments

Douglas announces on Letterman that he has stage four cancer.  He was diagnosed three weeks prior and completed his first round of treatment.

It had been bothering me for a while. In the early summer, I had a really sore throat … and I actually went through a litany of doctors and tests and they didn’t find anything…The percentages are very good. I would hate to say, but right now, it looks like it should be 80 percent, and with certain hospitals and everything, it does improve.

Behind the Candelabra

Douglas plays pianist Liberace in this biopic that reflects on his relationship with Scott Thorson, played by Matt Damon. This HBO movie is directed by Steven Soderbergh.

I met him once in passing. My father had a weekend house in Palm Springs and I remember driving out and we came to this cross-section and this Rolls-Royce convertible pulled up alongside. It was a sunny day and, my God, the reflections were bouncing off his gold jewelry and diamond rings and his hair was perfectly coiffed. Of course, we now know that he was wearing a wig.

This is a two hander. And Matt, you’re only as good as your other hand.  You’re magnificent, and the only reason I’m standing here is because of you.  You really deserve half of this. So … you want the bottom or the top?

Douglas plays Oren Little in this comedy directed by Rob Reiner. A bad tempered, widowed realtor enlists the help of his neighbor, a recently widowed lounge singer, when he finds himself with a granddaughter he never knew existed until his estranged son drops her in his lap. Co-starring Diane Keaton.

Oren is a good character. People particularly love to watch a**holes who fall in love and, if you end up actually liking the couple in the end, you’ve done a good job.

I guess at this point in my life, at my age, you’ve gone through so many things that nothing really surprises you. But you read a script and smile in those pieces that come close to your story.
