Leicester 1-0 Middlesbrough (replay after 1-1)
An extra time goal from Steve Claridge in the replay at Hillsbrough gives Leicester City their second League Cup win. A last minute equaliser at Wembley had denied Middlesbrough victory. This would be the last League Cup Final to go to a replay with penalties used to decide subsequent finals that finish all square after extra time.
Chelsea 2-0 Middlesbrough
Chelsea win their third League Cup (and first since 1965) with extra time goals from Sinclair & Di Matteo. Middlesbrough are the unlucky losers for the second year in a row but are consoled with promotion back to the Premier League at the end of the season.
Middlesbrough 2-1 Bolton
It’s third time lucky for the Teesiders as ‘Boro win the 2004 League Cup Final with goals from Job and Zenden. The victory comes after consecutive losses in the 1997 and 1998 finals and is the first major trophy win in the club’s history.
Sheffield 3-2 Middlesbrough
Atdhe Nuhiu puts Sheffield ahead six minutes into the game. Steve May gives them the second in the 42nd minute and Nuhiu scores his second. Skipper Grant Leadbitter scores a penalty for Middlesbrough in the 72 minute and then another from the same spot in the second minute of extra time. Karanka:
It is very difficult to explain. I prefer to keep calm now and analyse the game when I arrive home. I don’t know if some of my players think they are untouchable but it is disappointing the way some played.
Middlesbrough sign
