The Two Faces of January

In this movie directed by Hossein Amini, Isaac plays Rydal, a greek-speaking American working as a tour guide and scamming tourists on the side. He meets an American couple who befriend him. When he goes to visit them at their hotel, they ask him to move the unconscious body of a man who claims the couple attacked him. He gets compromised and their allegiance is put to the test. Co-starring Kirsten Dunst, Viggo Mortensen. Asked if he was surprised about the finale:

Yeah, I remember that being a strangely emotional moment. The irony is that it’s much more emotional than his earlier scene with Colette, who he is supposedly in love with. It’s a process of projection, or displacement, where he’s watching his father just disintegrate through Chester. And what Patricia Highsmith and Hoss both picked up on is showing people at their weakest, and ugliest. Viggo was never afraid to be ugly, or stupid, or foolish, and in fact he looked for those places.

Oscar Isaac interview

Popsugar interviews Isaac about getting ready for his role as Abel in the film A Most Violent Year.

Everything was about presentation. Everything is a strategy for the goal. I remember I was just trying to figure out the character; I was like, “J.C., what’s he thinking here?” and he would say, “I don’t know, but his hair is going to be amazing!” And I was like, “Yeah, but what does he want?” and he was like, “I don’t know, but his suits are going to be so nice!” Finally he said, “Look, his suits have nothing to do with vanity. His suits are suits of armor.” Everything is about presentation, what is showing.
