Groening is charged with 300,000 counts of accessory to murder. Groening is accused of helping in the operation of the death camp including collecting possessions taken from the victims. State prosecutors for the city of Hannover:

He helped the Nazi regime benefit economically, and supported the systematic killings.

Groening asks for forgiveness at the start of his trial. He admits he knew Jews were sent to gas chambers but denies he was involved.

For me there’s no question that I share moral guilt…I ask for forgiveness. Whether I am guilty under criminal law, you will have to decide.

Groening is convicted of being an accessory to the murder of 300,000 people in Auschwitz. He is sentenced to four years in jail, beyond the three year sentence sought by the prosecution. World Jewish Congress President Lauder:
