The Longest Ride

Eastwood plays Luke, a champion bull rider looking for a comeback, in this romantic drama, directed by  George Tillman Jr, from the book by Nicholas Sparks. Luke’s romance with Sophia (Britt Robertson) a college student who is about to embark upon her dream job in New York City’s art world is tested by their conflicting paths, and inspired by their connection to Ira (Alan Alda), whose wife was killed in a car crash. Tillman Jr. on casting:

When he came in, I thought it was his dad 25 years ago. He looked exactly like him. I said, ‘This isn’t going to work. People are going to think it’s Clint Eastwood in the movie’.

On the leading man’s assets:

We kept Scott’s butt shot in the film. The test audience didn’t want to lose that.

Eastwood says he did not ride a bull in the film, but did so once filming wrapped, despite the studio telling him not to. He lasted 2.5 seconds.

You’re surrounded by metal, There’s a 2,000 pound bull underneath your legs. It can buck up at any second with its horns.

On Air interview

Seacrest interviews Eastwood during On Air With Ryan Seacrest about his role as Luke Collins in the film The Longest Ride.

What’s really special about this movie is, it’s about life and the choices we make and relationships. I think it’s different from some of the other [Nicholas Sparks movies]. It’s really grounded in reality. I think it’s one of his better ones in recent years. Nothing can prepare you for riding a bull. It’s probably the dumbest thing I’ve ever done.
