Today show appearance

Interview0 Comments

The band and friends are interviewed by Grundy on Today programme. The interview derails when Lydon swears under his breath and Grundy asks him to repeat it.

Grundy: Well suppose they [classical composers] turn other people on?
Lydon: [Under his breath] That’s just their tough shit.
Grundy: It’s what?
Lydon: Nothing. A rude word. Next question.
Grundy: No, no, what was the rude word?
Lydon: Shit.
Grundy: Was it really? Good heavens, you frighten me to death.

Grundy also flirts with Sioux.

Grundy: We’ll meet afterwards, shall we? [Sioux does a camp pout]
Jones: You dirty sod. You dirty old man!
Grundy: Well keep going, chief, keep going. Go on, you’ve got another five seconds. Say something outrageous.
Jones: You dirty bastard!
Grundy: Go on, again.
Jones: You dirty f-cker! [Laughter from the group]
Grundy: What a clever boy!
Jones: What a f-cking rotter.

Signs Sex Pistols

Branson signs the Sex Pistols.

I saw them live in London I thought they were incredibly exciting. I rang up the chairman of EMI and said if he wanted to get rid of his embarrassment give me a ring and I was told quite bluntly that they were happy with the Sex Pistols. That night they went on the Bill Grundy show … the next morning at literally about 6:30 in the morning I got a call saying come over over for breakfast, and I arrived and he handed over the Sex Pistols contract and said the Sex Pistols are yours. We shook hands with Malcom Mclaren who promptly then went and signed them to A&M, at lunchtime they threw up all over A&M’s desks and by the afternoon they were a Virgin band.

Inducted into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

The group is inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame during the 21st induction ceremony. A statement from the group’s website:

Next to the Sex Pistols, rock and roll and that hall of fame is a p*** stain. If you voted for us, hope you noted your reasons. You’re anonymous as judges, but you’re still music industry people. We’re not coming. You’re not paying attention.
