Ne Yo interview

Ne Yo is interviewed by Hall on The Arsenio Hall show. They talk about his unique approach to his international tour, child foster donations and his motivation to guide disadvantaged kids.

It’s not this kids fault that kid’s parents decided that they didn’t want to be parents so now they’re in a foster home. So now that he’s in a foster home, he doesn’t get some of the opportunities that somebody that grew up with a mother and father gets, I don’t think that’s fair.

I find to me these kids get into trouble but to me they don’t get into trouble because of the industry they get into trouble because they come from messed up families.

Most guys I know, like you, my brother, Dave, you guys got that in common you were kids when you started, ‘ I want to do this’. When I started doing it, like I said I was forty two years old, my wife was alive. But forty five years into it my wife passed away.

Me with the Robin Hood project my accountant asked if I wanted to make a tax id so I could get the money back. I just told him that it wasn’t about that. The money I give it comes from my heart. Well it comes from my bank account but it comes straight from my heart. There is no certain thing that I donate to.

They talk about his memory of his father and how he got upset for the first time recently as he thinks about his father.

The way he dressed, his whole charisma, his style, his swag and so I celebrate him you know, it’s in my genes. He had a hustler’s spirit. It’s just a blessing and that’s why it’s so important to me with my six kids to make sure that they know that I’m there for them.

We had a great time in the 80s that was just an era, they can’t even dream of that era. That was everything in your face back then. You think this man is big now he was unstoppable in the 80s…unstoppable.

My father coached me so I had to be the best player on the team right. So playing sports has always been very huge in my life, I was able to show the community that regardless of my disability, regardless of where I come from of who I am respect me on the basketball court, respect me on the baseball field then they respect me in life.

We didn’t have a car to get where we had to go so we had to catch the bus a lot of different places. So I remember carrying groceries in the hot sun and I remember asking myself ‘how does my dad do this?’, you know what I’m saying? I was this little kid so I really didn’t want to do that, but I had to ’cause my dad was like, ‘Boy you gon’ carry them groceries, you gon’ get on this bus’. It just made me a better person today, you know to appreciate everything, you know nothing was handed down.

We love standups we’re very inspired by them. We do a type of standup on our show but really what we do is we get out there and we play around and we kind of try and find things for like an hour and just cut the funniest little things we can find.

We gotta understand. We’re locking people up and forgetting about ’em. This are young men, young women predominantly from neighborhoods where the school system didn’t support them. It’s gonna be up to us to actually figure out a way to solve this problem and we have to do it, the government’s not gonna do it we have to do it.

Attachment parenting is a loose sort of guidelines that many people follow. A lot of people don’t realize that they’re following them when they do things like staying with their child using slings instead of strollers. Safely co sleeping or sleeping in the same room if not the same bed with your child sort of seeking to be attuned with them in a positive way.

I have to give that credit to Malcolm Lee. I think this was really the first time that a lot of the gang genres that was coming out just prior to this. It was the first time that you saw a group of affluent, articulate young black people.

It was brought up with English comics called Dandy and Beano and my favorite character was Desperate Dan. Then after the war, not the First World War, The Second World War, Captain Marvel was the comic that came to England. Captain Marvel was completely new for me.
