36 people die after a boat capsizes near the central Philippines. The 27 meter boat is carrying 173 passengers and had just left the shore when it capsizes in high winds. Red Cross staff are on the pier in Ormoc assisting those who make it back to shore with blankets and meals.

Officials confirm Philippine’s second case of MERS in a 36-year-old man from Dubai, who flew to Manila on a flight from Dubai, after making a stopover in Saudi Arabia. He began showing symptoms and was admitted to the Research Institute of Tropical Medicine in Muntinlupa city, about 30km (18 miles) south of the capital, Manila, where he tested positive and was quarantined. The patient is recovering, but authorities continue to investigate those who he was in contact with.

Expects to win South China Sea case

The Philippines expects a United Nations tribunal at The Hague on July 7 to 13 to rule in its favour in the dispute with China over territories in the South China Sea. China has refused to participate in the arbitration proceedings. The upcoming hearings will decide whether the tribunal has jurisdiction over the case. Foreign secretary del Rosario will lead the government delegation, assisted by US-based lawyers.Spokesperson:

We prepared a strong case. We believe we stand on strong legal ground. We believe the tribunal will look at our case with favour. We are confident of the Philippine position on this matter.

Removes Chinese name from map

Google removes the Chinese name for a South China Sea shoal bitterly disputed by Beijing and Manila from its maps service, following an outcry from Filipinos. The service earlier labelled the shoal as part of China’s Zhongsha island chain, prompting an online campaign demanding that the Internet giant stop identifying the outcrop as part of Chinese territory. Google’s office in Manila:

We’ve updated Google Maps to fix the issue. We understand that geographic names can raise deep emotions which is why we worked quickly once this was brought to our attention.

The action is taken to compel him to pay back money that promoters say ius owed to them after he failed to appear for a previous appearance.
