A lot of that character was my childhood. I wasn’t intense like that, but the character is just fear. That’s what he does when he’s afraid—he fights.

Oh my God.  Rebecca had already been cast. They wanted to see the two of us together. I tested, and to make a short story long, we didn’t test that well. Paul just believed in me. I told him exactly what I was going to do. We talked about it for a long time and he trusted me.

Legend

In this fable directed by Ridley Scott, Cruise plays Jack, a forest dweller in a fairytale world. Jack lives without care, in love with his darling Lili, played by Mia Sara.  One day he shows Lili a pair of unicorns, and before he can warn her, she touches the stallion, setting off a chain of events that will plunge the world into a magic-induced darkness. As Jack tries to set things right, she is captured by the Lord of Darkness, played by Tim Curry. With Lili’s help, Jack is eventually able to complete his quest and set things back as they should be.

Legend was an interesting thing. I don’t know how Harrison Ford has done so many of those types of films. I mean, I did All The Right Moves, and I thought, “Okay, I’ve done the two extremes of high school life. I’ve done it.” In Legend, I’m this magical character, Jack O’ The Green. The sets were huge. Sometimes we would be working on a scene that might last 30 seconds in the film, but it took a week to shoot it. It’s stunning and gorgeous and poetic and most of the time I would be looking at a piece of black tape and having to imagine all of it. It was exciting, but it made me hungry to do a piece like Top Gun.

Bruckheimer:

We sent him down to El Centro, and he jumped in the back of that jet and just had the ride of his life.  At the time, he had shoulder-length hair, and [the Navy pilots] said, ‘We’re going to take this hippie for a real ride,’ and they just blasted him through the air and did rolls and did all kinds of crazy stuff with him.  He got on the ground and walked over to a phone booth – we didn’t have cell phones in those days. He calls me up, he says, ‘I’m doing it.’ [Laughs] That was it.

Then Marty [Scorsese] called me and said he wanted me to read the script for The Color of Money. He wanted to know what I thought of it. And I was thinking, “He wants to know what I think of it. What does that mean?” [laughs] I read it and thought, “There’s a role in here for me. Holy shit. This thing is great.

Cruise plays Cole Trickle, an up and coming NASCAR racer in this car racing drama directed by Tony Scott. Trickle wants to win the Indianapolis 500 but faces obstacles, including lack of a proper car. A twist of fate allows him the opportunity to compete at the top level. The character of Cole is largely based off of real race car driver, Dale Earnhardt. Co-starring Nicole Kidman, Robert Duvall, Randy Quaid and Cary Elwes.

The characters are really well developed and it reaches all different levels of what I feel of American culture…To me, racing, there’s something very heroic about the drivers. Almost like modern day gladiators.

I couldn’t wait to play that courtroom scene in A Few Good Men with Jack Nicholson. I’d been thinking about it for months. And it was like, here it is, man, I’m going to enjoy every moment of this…People came from all around just to watch us play that scene. They were showing up along the edges! So many people. And when the scene ended the first time, there was applause. Everyone around, applauding. God, it was exciting. It was electric.

I like watching sports, but I’m not interested in making a movie about sports. You could have taken this guy and put him in any field. I like the people in it. I like the relationship with the girl. There are so many levels to this.

Cruise plays Dr. Bill Hartford in this erotic thriller by Stanley Kubrick.  When Dr. Hartford discovers his wife’s sexual fantasies, he sets out on a quest to quench his own desires.  He finds himself skirting the edges of an elite secret society that wishes to remain that way. After many close calls, and disturbing situations he finally abandons his quest and confesses himself to his wife.  Co-starring Nicole Kidman as Alice Hartford and Sydney Pollack and LeeLee Sobieski

People thought that making the film was the beginning of the end of my marriage, but I don’t really think it was. Tom and I were close then, and it was very much the three of us. Onscreen, the husband and wife are at odds, and Stanley wanted to use our marriage as a supposed reality. That was Stanley: He used the movie as provocation, pretending it was our sex life — which we weren’t oblivious to, but obviously it wasn’t us. We both decided to dedicate ourselves to a great filmmaker and artist.

Before that relationship can begin, however, David is coaxed into a car driven by an ex-lover, Julie, who turns out to be suicidal. Driving her car off a bridge, Julie kills herself and horribly disfigures David. Reconstructive surgery and the loving support of Sofia seem to reverse David’s luck, but eerie incidents are soon making him question the reality of his existence and his control over his life, even while he is suspected of complicity in Julie’s death. Co-starring Penelope Cruz and Cameron Diaz.

As a thriller, [Sky] has all of Cameron Crowe’s ideas in it, and the questions and the things that I find interesting. You can have that ride, the pop culture ride, but underneath there’s some things you can walk away with and a film that you might want to see before dinner so you can sit down and talk about it.
