Film Appearance

Hanks stars in Nothing in Common, a film that proved Hanks’ ability to star in not only comedic but also serious roles. Hanks told Rolling Stone:

It changed my desires about working in movies. Part of it was the nature of the material, what we were trying to say. But, besides that, it focused on people’s relationships. The story was about a guy and his father.

Bosom Buddies

TV Appearance

Hanks stars opposite Peter Scolari in ABC’s sitcom, Bosom Buddies, in which the two disguise themselves as women to further their career and live in the only apartment they can afford. Co-Producer, Ian Praiser, tells Rolling Stone

The first day I saw him on set, I though, ‘Too bad he won’t be in television for long’. I knew he’d be a movie star in two years. The television show came out of nowhere, then out of nowhere it was canceled. He figured he’d go back to pulling ropes and hanging lights in a theater.

Other Awards

TomHanks_GLTFHanks wins the Cleveland Critics Circle Award for Best Actor for his performance as Proteus in Shakespeare’s The Two Gentlemen of Verona. The award was his first major accomplishment as an actor.

I thought the whole point of being 18 or 19 years old was to throw your stuff in the back of the car and go somewhere.

Tom Hanks born in Concord, California

Thomas Jeffrey Hanks is born in Concord, California to Amost Mefford Hanks, a cook, and Janet Marylyn Frager, a hospital worker.

I was a geek, a spaz. I was horribly, painfully, terribly shy. At the same time, I was the guy who’d yell out funny captions during film strips.
