Burrell is nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy at the 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards for portraying Phil Dunphy on Modern Family.

In classic Phil Dunphy fashion, I was fast asleep when the nominations were announced and am deeply saddened to have missed Sofia’s pronunciation of Mariska Hargitay. All kidding aside, I’m so proud of the fact that Modern Family was recognized in so so many categories—the Television Academy so graciously shared the love with our entire modern family.

Burrell gives interview to Elle about what he did that broke his mom’s heart.

I was never a particularly promiscuous person. And I had some short relationships, but I only had one true one-night stand. And it was one of the least pleasant experiences of my life. I would take it back if I could.

I would like to propose that these awards be settled by feats of strength. I would still lose to everyone, including both Chris Colfer and Jon Cryer, but it would be worth it to see us all in singlets.

Burrell is nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy for the 64th Emmy Awards for portraying Phil Dunphy on Modern Family.

This is the third year in a row that I was woken up to that particular good news. The past two years I changed my daughter’s diaper immediately—that was the first thing I did—and this morning the first thing that she did was stick her foot in my mouth. I don’t know what that means, but it can’t be good. It’s basically telling me not to talk, I think.

Burrell is nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy at the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards for portraying Phil Dunphy on Modern Family.

I am honored and humbly surprised that this good fortune continues. I’ve never had something so wonderful happen four years in a row before, other than winning the New York state lottery from 1993 to ’97. I share this with the entire cast and crew of Modern Family. I’m sure it’s not surprising to anyone who’s ever worked on a television show, but our writers are the reason we’re still in this position. I’m eternally grateful for their talent and surprising good looks.

Elle Magazine interviews Burrell about his role in the Sundance film The Skeleton Twins and how different it is from his role as Phil Dunphy on Modern Family.

Once you do a show like Modern Family, which has been an amazing thing and I’m so happy about it, it does make it a little challenging to do other things. So I was really excited that I was getting a chance to play something like that, something different. I also just love taking a bunch of comedy people and making a dark film.
