Perry plays Madea, a tell it like it is mother and grandmother in Diary Of A Mad Black Woman. Helen McCarthy has everything a woman wants: a nice house and rich husband. However, after her husband Charles throws her out of the house, Helen decides to live with her grandmother Madea. Helen learns how to provide for herself and even meets a new man, Orlando. She is almost over her husband Charles until he is almost killed by a vengeful client. Helen wonders if she has the heart to forgive him despite everything. Co-stars Shemar Moore, Kimberly Elise, and Steve Harris.

On the success of the movie:

I wasn’t surprised by the success, I was thankful. Being on tour all over the country, you see all of these people and they say, “We’re going, Tyler. We’re going to support you. We’re going to support you.” And then they go so I was grateful. I knew they were there, but to have them go was a whole ‘nother thing. I was grateful. I was so thankful to God for that to happen.

Madea’s Family Reunion

Perry plays Madea in the movie Madea’s Family Reunion. Madea has been ordered to be the adoptive parent of Nikki, a rebellious runaway all while trying to help her niece get through relationship troubles. Madea must organize a family union while juggling family affairs.  As the reunion gets closer, secrets are revealed and tensions rise. Madea must try to keep the peace, while keeping her family together. Co-stars Blair Underwood, Rochelle Aytes, Boris Kodjoe, and Lynn Whitfield.

On writing:

You know, I write from the aspect of complete life. In life we go through moments where we’re in very serious moments one minute and then we’re in very dramatic moments the next. I know that this works because I’m on stage with 30,000 people every week and I do it every week. We go into one serious moment and then we’re laughing the next, and it helps to talk about these kinds of subjects.

Why Did I Get Married

Perry plays Terry, a husband who tries to save his marriage on the movie Why Did I Get Married. This movie tells the story of eight married friends who come together for their yearly vacation only to spend their time working on their marriage and friendships. But  after a secret is revealed about one couple’s relationship it almost drives all the couples apart. Co-stars Jill Scott, Janet Jackson, and Tasha Smith.

I try to grow on every film, but I’m walking now. I was crawling on everything else. The way this story was told I think was very unique. Using the camera the way I did was very different for me. There’s some people who really get into camera movement and all this other stuff, but for me, I really stretched it. And having an amazing cast really made the movie come alive because everybody brought their own personality to it.

When Candace ends up in jail, Madea befriends the young woman, and gives her motherly advice. Co-stars David Mann, Tamela Mann, Derek Luke, and Keisha Knight Pulliam.

After The Family That Preys, which was such a big, heavy movie, I wanted to do something where I had some fun. I put that Madea costume back on and I think I just went crazy. I had a really great time.

O Magazine Interview

Perry discusses the first time he portrayed the role of Madea on stage:

There was a sold-out house at the Regal Theater in Chicago, and five minutes before the show, I put on the costume and stood at the mirror for the first time. I’m saying, Damn, are you really going to do this? Then the show started and I had no choice—they pushed me out onstage. Madea had a cane and she didn’t talk very loud and her voice was much deeper and she sat in one spot the whole time. But after a while, I finally had to move. And when I moved there was laughter.

Racist traffic stop

Perry accuses two officers of racially profiling him during a traffic stop in Atlanta, GA. Perry makes a left turn from the right lane to ensure he isn’t being followed when two white officers pull him over for an illegal turn.

I was harassed by two hostile white officers until a black cop arrived to the scene and recognized me. The black cop immediately took both officers to the back of my car and spoke to them in a hushed tone. After that, one of the officers stayed near his car while one came back, very apologetic. I said, all of that to say this: do you see how quickly this could have turned for the worse?

Police officers cleared

The two white police officers that pulled Perry over for an illegal turn are exonerated on the racial profiling charges. Atlanta PD:

The officers claim they couldn’t see the driver behind his tinted windows, so racially profiling Perry would have been impossible. The cops claim they believed Perry was driving a stolen car at the time — because it matched a description of a stolen vehicle — and that’s the primary reason he was pulled over.

Alex Cross

Film Appearance0 Comments

Perry plays a detective who is torn between justice and personal vengeance in the movie Alex Cross. When a wealthy and well-connected woman is found dead in her mansion Cross and his team is assigned to the case. They soon find themselves playing a cat and mouse game with a man that remains unidentifiable. After his wife is killed by the same mystery man, the case becomes a personal obsession for Cross.

Well, me being on screen and having the opportunity to just focus in on the character, be the character, and experience all of his different levels and complexities, from the doctor to the family man to being sensitive to being a complete animal when he’s been wrong and has to track the killer.  All of those things were quite intriguing to me.  I had the opportunity to play and be all of those emotions.

Seacrest interviews Perry during On Air With Ryan Seacrest asks him if giving up control of Alex Cross.

I started writing, because after the first couple of days I realized this is going to be very difficult for me to just sit here. What was easy for me, is to let go. Because Rob (Cohen) had a clear direction and anytime somebody knows where they’re going, I don’t mind following at all.

Winfrey interviews Tyler Perry and questions him on Whitney Houston, and his career.

I felt a huge responsibility for her for Whitney herself. I felt a tremendous responsibility from the first day we sat down in that restaurant and had a conversation where she was so open with me. I stood with them the Houston family. Whatever they needed, they would call and say this and this is going on or that’s going on. Or I would talk to her sometimes and she would just be, you know out of it, but trying to be together.
