The total prize money awarded will be $38.3 million, an 11.7 percent increase over a year ago and a nearly 65 percent increase over three years ago. The total main draw prize money – which includes the men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles – has increased by 12.5 percent from 2013. USTA President and US Open Chairman Dave Haggerty:

Last year, to recognize the importance of the players and the key role they have in building our sport, the USTA shared our vision to reach $50 million in prize money at the US Open by 2017. This year’s prize money increase continues the commitment to make the US Open one of the most lucrative purses in all of sports.

Advances to semi-final

Williams recovers from a slow start to beat Flavia Penneta and make it to the semi-finals with a 6-3 6-2 game. Williams has not lost more than three games in any set the tournament.

I felt she was playing really well, I don’t feel I was doing too much wrong (in the first three games). I just said to myself that if she keeps it up then she absolutely deserves the win and I just tried to do a little better. I had a lot of fun today, I really enjoyed it and I’m so happy to have won.

Djokovic wins

Djokovic wins a match against Andy Murray to advance to the semi-final of the US Open. Djokovic wins 7-6, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 after three hours and 32 minutes.

I didn’t expect any less before the match against Andy as the last five times we have played we have gone over three, four hours. You kind of get used to it after a while but I am glad to get through to another semi-final. He has changed his game for better over the last couple of years. He worked with Ivan (Lendl) and won a couple of grand slams and an Olympic gold medal so is an established top player, somebody who has an immense quality.

Federer defeats Monfils

Federer advances to the US Open semi-finals after his win against Gael Monfils. The set scores are as follows: 4-6, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-2.

I still thought the finish line was far away for Gael. I knew I could play better tennis. When I was down two match points, that’s when I wasn’t feeling too good any more. I thought this is it, don’t let him have an easy shot, and go down fighting. But I served well and managed to turn it around.

Serena beats sister in U.S. Open

Match Report0 Comments

Serena wins the U.S. Open quarterfinal against her sister Venus. 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. Serena is 16-11 in their all-in-the-family matches, including 9-5 in majors and 3-2 at the U.S. Open. Serena:

Obviously we are very, very tough competitors on the court, but once the match is over, the second it’s done, you know, we’re sisters, we’re roommates, and we’re all that.

Coach Mouratoglou:

They both played their best. If they were feeling uncomfortable with playing each other, they could not play at that level.
