Palo Alto

Cameo/Guest Appearance0 Comments

In this high school drama directed by Gia Coppola and based on the collection of short stories by James Franco, Kilmer plays Stewart,  April’s (emma Roberts) video game playing, stoner stepfather. The brief role finds Kilmer offering fatherly advice and support to his less than appreciative charge.  Co-starring James Franco and Jack Kilmer. Jack:

Yeah, he just kind of said like dad stuff. [Laughs] He’s really supportive and he would say like, ‘You just got to breathe and be super honest and tell the truth and take risks and just have so much fun.’ And that was kind of it. I’d ask him for advice sometimes, but he also understood that I wanted to figure a lot of it out on my own, because that’s kind of just my style.

Kilmer plays Sheriff Hofstadder in the D.J. Caruso written and directed adaptation of Brock Cole’s The Goats.  This coming of age anti-bullying movie tells the story of two outcast prank victims who run away from summer camp and have an adventure that includes stealing Hofstadder’s car.  Co-starring Chandler Canturbury and Annalise Basso. Caruso:

Val is always misunderstood in a way and he’s one of those actors that are dangerous because you don’t know what he’s thinking. You don’t know what he’s going to do and I felt like Hofstadder was one of those characters that actually was trying to do the right thing, but he was just so off kilter that the way he tried to do the right thing would feel creepy and scary…I felt like Val would be perfect in that. He just had a little window and we basically shot his stuff in a day and a half. It was great to reconnect and work with him and hopefully we can do it again soon because I think he’s one of those treasures that were misunderstood. Before I had worked with him I felt he had gone through some trials and tribulations on set that gave him a bad reputation, but I’ve only had great experiences with him.

Anthony and I were such great rivals in Top Gun, we always had so much fun on set. And I’ve always thought so highly of Anthony, especially with his success on ER. So it was really great to find out that we would work together again on Planes.

In this horror thriller directed by Francis Ford Coppola, Kilmer plays Hall Baltimore, a writer who needs his next story. While on a book signing tour he finds it when a body turns up in the local lake. Baltimore delves into the occult and ends up discovering much about himself while helping to solve the mystery. Also starring Elle Fanning, Bruce Dern and Joanne Whalley

There’s a couple of dream sequences. What Francis has done is use the 3D sparingly. It only comes a couple of times, so it’s very memorable when there’s an event and you put your glasses on … It’s a Halloween extravaganza.

I would say that the best actors of my generation that I would call geniuses are Val Kilmer and Robert Downey, Jr. So to get a chance to work with Val was a good thing, and I hope we’ll have more to do together.

Also starring Stephen Dorff, Sam Shephard, Harold Perrineau, and Marisol Nichols.

I actually turned the studio down because I wanted to be in a nice, light-hearted comedy. But the research was so compelling. It feels like you must imagine it’s like in prison. I think it’s easy to say you don’t want to go to prison.

In this revenge drama directed by D.J. Caruso, Kilmer plays Danny Parker, a trumpet playing speed freak who is actually Tom Van Allen, a man with a beautiful life before his wife was killed as he helplessly watched, by the dealers during a robbery. Also starring Vincent D’Onofrio, Adam Goldberg and Luis Guzman.

I’m proud of it. It was very challenging and risky with all the different styles that it takes on. If you can imagine reading it, it’s just hard to see working because they almost never do.

The Island of Dr. Moreau

In this sci-fi horror thriller based on the H.G. Wells novel and directed by John Frankenheimer, Kilmer plays Montgomery, the increasingly insane and violent assistant of equally insane Dr. Moreau. Moreau and Montgomery are conducting genetic and behavioral experiments on human/animal hybrid creatures that they have created – at least until a man they rescue sees what they are up to.  Also starring Marlon Brando, David Thewlis and Fairuza Balk. On the bad press:

Well, it hurts. To take two things: [Marlon] Brando and I have been friends for a long time, so they said we weren’t. I got along great with the crew, so they said I lit some guy on fire. Exactly what wasn’t the case. And they said that I was irresponsible. I would go to the set on days when I wasn’t called to try and make it better.

Tombstone

In this historical western action drama directed by George P. Cosmotos, Kilmer plays infamous outlaw Doc Holiday.  The story revolves around the events surrounding the gunfight at the O.K. Corral.  Holliday was an outlaw, but he was also Wyatt Earp’s best friend and a superior gambler and gunfighter.  Also starring Kurt Russell, Bill Paxton, and Sam Elliott.

Doc Holliday was fun, though. It was fun to not carry the burden of being the lead. All those responsibilities, but yet still have cool stuff to do. It’s fun to shoot everybody and have such a cute girlfriend.

Directed by Oliver Stone, the movie follows Morrison through moments that molded his life, music, and ultimate death. Also starring Meg Ryan, Kyle MacLaclan, Frank Whaley, Kevin Dillon and Michael Wincott.

There was nothing that wasn’t attractive about it, really.  I was fascinated even about the things that were repulsive. . . . You shouldn’t be afraid.

Real Genius

Kilmer plays Chris Knight in this comedy directed by Martha Coolidge. Knight is a super-genius at a technology school who takes nothing seriously and drives his professor crazy while developing a laser that the professor intends to sell. When the students learn of the professor’s plan, Knight organizes the mother of all pranks and all the students help him pull it off.  Also starring Gabriel Jarett, Michelle Meyrink, and William Atherton. Gabriel:

Val was very focused on Val. We got along fine, but I always got the feeling that he didn’t want to share the screen with a 15-year-old punk. In my opinion, Val is a brilliant actor and should be a much bigger star than he is today.

Top Secret!

In this comedy spoof on World War Two spy movies, Kilmer plays Nick Rivers, an American rock and roll singer who gets involved with the French Resistance and becomes a spy thanks to a troubled but lovely lady he meets. Directed by Jim Abrahams, David Zucker and Jerry Zucker;  the film also stars Omar Sharif and Jeremy Kemp.

There were cruel comedians. Like I learned the guitar cause I played this guy and there were a couple of songs were he played the guitar. And I would just kill myself to learn the songs and make the guys happy and everything. And all along they knew they didn’t want me to play the guitar. They just liked that look on my face. Meanwhile my fingers were bleeding so; they didn’t really want me to play.
