A Prairie Home Companion
Harrelson plays Dusty, a singing cowboy, in this musical drama directed by Robert Altman. America’s most celebrated radio show broadcasts its last program as their regular performers hold court in the studio. Co-starring Lily Tomlin, Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline, John C. Reilly and Lindsay Lohan.
It’s a whole different way of doing a movie, which I thought was really interesting. It was fun, got to play a singing cowboy, me and John C. Reilly. And Garrison Keillor I think is a fascinating guy and really entertaining.
The People vs. Larry Flynt
0 CommentsHarrelson plays Hustler founder Larry Flynt in this biopic directed by Milos Forman. The story follows his poor beginnings in Kentucky to his involvement in the sex industry, where he meets the love of his life, played by Courtney Love. He is taken to court by an anti-pornography group and is defended by a young lawyer, played by Edward Norton. Forman on casting Harrelson:
I never saw him on television [in Cheers], and the only film I saw him in, Indecent Proposal, was not very convincing to me. So I agreed to send the script to the two first names on the list, Tom Hanks and Bill Murray. Fortunately, they turned it down. Then I asked for a meeting with Woody. We had dinner together, and I was sold on Woody from the first meeting. I liked him enormously.

That’s what I like about Woody. He looks like he’s the dumb country bumpkin, right? But he’s really, really smart. And he is blessed with the luck of the leprechaun.

On his father being a contract killer:
I was 11 or 12 when I heard his name mentioned on a car radio. I was in the car waiting for a lady who was picking me up from school, helping my mum, and anyway I was listening to the radio and it was talking about Charles V Harrelson and his trial for murder and blah blah blah blah and I’m sitting there thinking there can’t be another Charles V Harrelson. I mean, that’s my dad! It was a wild realisation. Then the woman got in the car and saw my face and realised something was up. She was a very kind lady.
