Joins HP board

Andreessen joins the HP board of directors. He is awarded an annual cash retainer of $100,000 or HP securities as well as an annual equity retainer of $150,000. HP Chairman/CEO Hurd says:

Marc Andreessen is a software pioneer whose leadership has helped shape the Internet. Marc’s entrepreneurial background and industry expertise will be a welcome addition to the HP board of directors.

Opsware sale

Acquisition

Horowitz sells Opsware (formerly Loudcloud) to Hewlett-Packard Co. for approximately $1.6 billion. The cash tender deal values the company at $14.25 per share, making it the third-largest acquistion in HP’s history. Opsware has 350 customers and 550 staff, which HP intends to take on as part of the deal. Tom Hogan, senior VP of software at HP, says:

The acquisition of Opsware is intended to enable HP Software to help our customers resolve one of their critical pain points: controlling the increasing complexity and cost of managing the data center.

Addresses lack of computer experience

Hired

HP hires Fiorina as CEO although she has no experience in the computer industry. She says the company has plenty of computer people, she plans to focus more on the type of person who should be running the company.

Look, lack of computer expertise is not Hewlett-Packard’s problem. There are loads of people here who can provide that. I’ve demonstrated an ability to pick up quickly on the essence of what’s important. I know what I don’t know. And I know that our strengths are complementary. You have deep engineering prowess. I bring strategic vision, which HP needs.
