Both candidates declare victory

Both presidential candidates in the 2014 Indonesia election declare victory, as quick-count vote tallies appear to show that Jakarta governor Joko Widodo is ahead in more polls than former army general Prabowo Subianto. Official results are due July 20. Widodo claims victory based on polls that reliably predicted results of the April 20 legislative election and which show him leading by 3-6 percentage points, while Subianto says that he will not concede and that polls used by his faction show him leading by 4 points. Widodo:

Today the people have decided a new direction for Indonesia … This is a new chapter for Indonesia

Subianto:

We, Prabowo-Hatta, have received the support and mandate from the people of Indonesia

A contested election result will require a constitutional court hearing, delaying the election outcome.
