Dixon Smith fatally shoots Myers, a Florida sheriff’s deputy, several times from behind after being served a domestic violence injunction. The order being served by Myers was to bar Smith from possessing firearms. Myers is walking to Smith’s car to retrieve some weapons when Smith pulls out a concealed gun and begins shooting. Smith flees to a nearby Comfort Inn about nine miles away in Niceville, where he barricades himself in a room. When a special response team fired tear gas into the room, Smith charges out with a weapon and is fatally shot.
