heismanThe Heisman Trophy is awarded each year in December to the most outstanding player in college football. The award, created in 1935 by the Downtown Athletic Club, was originally named the DAC Trophy. The trophy was renamed in 1936 to honor the death of John Heisman, the club’s athletic director. The winners of the trophy are selected by sports journalists, previous Heisman Trophy winners and a survey of fans by ESPN (which equals one vote). The trophy itself, designed by sculptor Frank Eliscu, is made of bronze and modeled after 1934 New York University football player Ed Smith.
