Rosamund Pike born in London

Birth0 Comments

Pike is born in Hammersmith, London, to Caroline, a violinist, and Julian, an opera singer.

I definitely found it hard to contain my feelings as a little girl, Everything was big, and it still is.

Attends Wadham College

Attends College0 Comments

Pike attends Wadham College in Oxford, studying English literature. She paid her way through school by working a temp job.

As an actress I never thought I’d be earning any money.

Turned down by drama schools

Before being accepted at Oxford, Pike is turned down by every drama school she applies to:

There’s this impression that I’ve somehow lived a charmed life. When I applied for drama school I was turned down by every single one, which was crushing at 19, although it’s now a badge of honor.

Relationship with Woods

Romance0 Comments

rosamund-pike-relationship-woodsPike begins a relationship with Woods while studying at Oxford. She has not previously dated often:

I don’t sleep around … I’m not saying they’re the only people I’ve been out with. But I take love quite seriously. I’m talking about the life-changing ones, the ones who somehow get inside you, who actually alter your chemical make-up, where you get butterflies and feel like your stomach’s turning over – a whole physical world which you’re not in control of at all. And I think one is lucky when one gets to feel this. Some people I don’t think ever do.

Die Another Day

Film Appearance0 Comments

Pike plays the undercover MI6 agent Miranda Frost in the 20th James Bond film, directed by Lee Tamahori. After Bond is captured in North Korea, Frost is revealed to be a double agent and battles a female NSA agent aboard a plane carrying a doomsday device. Pierce Brosnan, Halle Berry, Toby Stephens, Rick Yune, John Cleese, and Judi Dench co-star.

Before I was cast as a Bond girl, I had never actually seen a James Bond movie. The Bond audition was strange—I’d just come back from China, doing the kind of hippie-backpacking thing that people do when they leave school. All the girls in this beautiful old town house waiting to see the casting director were sleek and dressed in what seemed to me like leather. I was wearing something very thick and woolly. I was convinced I was all wrong.

Hitchcock Blonde

Play/Show Appearance0 Comments

Pike appears in Terry Johnson’s play Hitchcock Blonde at the Royal Court Theatre. Johnson discusses the theme of the play:

You’ve actually reached a point in your life where the only play you could possibly write is a play about falling in love with a younger woman.

Inadvertently ordering the same dish as Hitchcock eats in the play:

I remember the first time I took Rosamund to lunch I accidentally ordered dover sole and immediately changed my order in case she left the restaurant.

Pike’s nude scene:

The agreement has always been that it’s in the play, you do it if you want to do it.

Promised Land

Film Appearance0 Comments

Pike plays the character Rose in Amos Gitai’s crime drama. She offers hope to a group of foreign prostitutes smuggled into Israel. Gitai:

Other films I’ve done, like Kadosh and Kippur, are all dealing with homogeneous Israeli microcosms, but with a critical attitude to religion or military activity. And now, with this group of films, starting with Promised Land and Free Zone, I’m more into the marriage of opposites, of difference, of the fragmentation of the coherence.

It’s a great romantic story with very, very real people in it and it’s open to so many interpretations, like any great bit of literature.

Film Appearance0 Comments

Pike plays the character Dr. Samantha Grimm in the sci fi-horror movie directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak and based on the id Software video game. Grimm creates a superhuman warrior to battle zombie creatures from Mars. Co-starring Karl Urban and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

It was great because I’d also come off a film that was all female–Pride & Prejudice. The chance is be holed up with a bunch of marines was quite attractive.

Summer and Smoke

Play/Show Appearance0 Comments

rosamund-pike-summer-smokePike plays Alma Winemiller in the adaptation of the Tennessee Williams play. In 1916 in the Deep South, Alma falls in love with the son of her neighbour. Co-starring Chris Carmack.

All five of the central characters have been catastrophically let down by their parents, and are looking for ways to patch up that void. Lacking in the most part a language of love, they seek to replace this with sex. All, that is, apart from my character, Alma. All her life she has been desperately in love with the son of the local doctor, and she believes that she craves his mind, unable to acknowledge that what she is really feeling is lust.

Fracture

Film Appearance0 Comments

Pike plays Nikki Gardner in the Gregory Hoblit-directed crime thriller. Gardner begins a relationship with a future employee at her law firm, but he is dragged back into his career as a district attorney after a failed attempt to try a man for murder. Co-starring Anthony Hopkins, Ryan Gosling, and David Strathairn.

It was the film rather than the part in this case. I said after Pride and Prejudice that I’d like to do a thriller because it was the kind of thing that I haven’t done and then this came along. I’d seen Primal Fear, which was Gregory Hoblit’s most famous film, and I was so disconcerted by that film that I thought, ‘My goodness, this is something that he’s going to do really really well.’ Aand I just wanted to be part of it.

Tabloid rumors untrue

Makes Statement0 Comments

Pike says rumors regarding her wedding to Wright being called off are untrue:

I still have no idea why Joe called off the wedding. He was never clear about it. Part of what makes it so confusing. Our Save the Date cards had been sent out; Save the Date cards which had a 1950s-style picture of the two of us in LA, taken by a friend at Christmas, done like an old-fashioned postcard with slightly unreal colours – we’d both designed it and the design was to make people laugh! Which it did! – but no invitations. My mother had to write to everyone to say that the wedding was no longer going to take place.

She says that reports she had sent wedding invitations featuring them in a hot tub are inaccurate, as are reports Wright was seen in a lapdancing club around the time the engagement was called off.

Fugitive Pieces

Film Appearance0 Comments

Pike plays Alex in Jeremy Podeswa’s adaptation of the Anne Michaels historical drama. Her marriage to a survivor of World War II, who was orphaned during the Holocaust, breaks down as her husband is absorbed in his reflections on his past life. Co-starring Stephen Dillane, Rade Šerbedžija, Ayelet Zurer, Robbie Kay, Ed Stoppard, and Rachelle Lefèvre.

It’s not an explosive tragedy, but I think they both know that something doesn’t work how they wanted it to.

Surrogates

Film Appearance0 Comments

Pike plays the character Maggie Greer in Jonathan Mostow’s adaptation of the sci fi-action comics by Top Shelf Productions. Tom investigates the death of two surrogates and uncovers a government plot, eventually freeing humans from the surrogate world. Bruce Willis, Radha Mitchell, Boris Kodjoe, Ving Rhames and James Cromwell co-star.

It’s a very real story about a man, Greer, having an existential crisis about what it means to be human.
