Poulter plays the character Gally in the Wes Ball-directed adaptation of the Thomas Dashner sci-fi thriller. In a mysterious clearing known as The Glade, a group of boys awake with no memory of who they are or how they got there. Gally clashes with their emerging leader, Thomas (Dylan O’Brien), as the boys try to find their way out of the Maze that keeps them prisoner. Co-starring Aml Ameen and Thomas Brodie-Sangster.
I think one of the things we really wanted to emphasize about what [author James Dashner] writes about in his books is that no one is innately bad. … Gally feels almost too villainous in the book, I think, and we just tried to make him a little more justified and rational than perhaps he is in the book. I threw out this idea that he’s just scared, that this tough guy act is just an exterior he wears to kind of mask the truth of the situation, which is that he’s a bit of a coward even if he’d never admit that.
