February 17th Brigade arrives at Compound
About 3.2 km away from the compound, at the February 17th Brigade’s headquarters, militia members hear the battle raging. Within five minutes 18 militiamen leave in five pickup trucks and arrive at the compound minutes five minutes later. They find the attackers organized in large groups that are too large to disperse. When the militia tells the besiegers that they are trying to reach the mission to verify that their comrades are safe, an attacker fires two warning shots at their feet. Moving out of range of the attackers’ small arms fire, the militia set up a position and bombarded the mob with longer-range weapons (Russian anti-aircraft Dushkas and RPGs) for about 90 minutes. The militia contingent is reinforced with other February 17th fighters who set up a perimeter along the streets surrounding the U.S. compound. [1.
