The artist releases Live to Tell. The song is featured on True Blue.
Sometimes when I’m writing songs, I’m just channeling. I could say that Live To Tell was about my childhood, my relationship with my parents, my father and my stepmother. But maybe not. It could be about something in an F. Scott Fitzgerald novel or a story that I heard once. It’s true, but it’s not necessarily autobiographical.
Dress You Up
The artist releases her song, Dress You Up, from her album, Like a Virgin.

The artist releases her song, You’ll See, from her album Something To Remember.
It’s about empowering yourself. As much as I like a song like Take A Bow, lyrically it only reflects one side of my personality. I have that side which is completely masochistic and willing to, literally, do anything for love. But there’s another side too which is – ‘Don’t f–k with me, I don’t need anybody. I can do what I want’ and You’ll See reflects that.
What It Feels Like for a Girl
The artist releases her song, What It Feels Like for a Girl, from Music.
Our generation certainly has been encouraged to grab life by the balls, be super-independent, get a great education, follow our dreams, kick ass, all that stuff, and I feel like I work up one day holding the golden ring and realized that smart, sassy girls who accomplish a lot and have their own cash and are independent are really frightening to men. I felt like, ‘Why didn’t somebody tell me? Why didn’t somebody warn me?’ And that’s also what that song is about – swallowing that bitter pill. It was a combination of that, and also just feeling incredibly vulnerable that inspired the song.
American Life
The artist releases her song, American Life, from her album with the same title.
Different things inspire me to write. I could be having a guitar lesson and something will just come to me. Or Mirwais will send me over music – rough stuff that doesn’t have an arrangement basic chord progressions. American Life came about itself like that. The music has to jar my brain in terms of lyrics. Sometimes I write free verse. I have a journal and I note down ideas I get from newspapers and books.
Cherish

The artist releases her song, Bedtime Story, from her album, Bedtime Stories. The music video to the song is inspired by the works of surrealist painters.
Like Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo. There’s that one shot where my hands are up in the air and stars are spinning around me. And me flying through the hallway with my hair trailing behind me, the birds flying out of my open robe – all of those images were an homage to female surrealist painters; there’s a little bit of Frida Kahlo in there, too.
Lucky Star
The artist releases Lucky Star. The song is featured on her self-titled album. MTV’s Ayeroff commissions the video for the single.
I made Lucky Star for $14,000 with a friend who was a pot grower from Bolinas, California (Arthur Pierson). We’d released ; Everybody, Burning Up, Holiday and Borderline as singles. And Madonna didn’t want to release Lucky Star. Around the same time, she was getting sued and needed money. I said, ‘Let me release Lucky Star, and I guarantee you’ll sell enough records to pay that off.’ Lucky Star broke the first album wide open.
Borderline
The artist releases her song, Borderline, from her debut, self-titled album.
Don’t Tell Me
The artist releases her song, Don’t Tell Me, from the album, Music.
To me it is a romantic song. Just, you know, rip my skin off, do not tell me who I should love, or how I should love. Don’t tell me to give up. To me, in a way it’s like that Frank Sinatra song, ‘If I can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere’.
Ray Of Light
The artist releases her song, Ray Of Light, from her album with the same title. Co-writer, Muldoon is completely unaware that the song is recorded until a friend hears it on the radio.
I was a bit annoyed at first because Madonna wanted 30 percent just for changing a couple of lines, but then I realized that 15 percent of millions is a lot better than 100 percent of nothing. I did very well out of it. It’s been a life-changing experience. I’d say I’m financially secure for at least the next five to ten years as a result of 15 percent of one track by Madonna.
The Power Of Good-Bye
The artist releases her song, The Power Of Goodbye, from her album, Ray Of Light.
La Isla Bonita
The artist releases La Isla Bonita. The song is featured on the album True Blue. In the song, Madonna sings about a fictional island where she longs to be.
I don’t know where that came from. I don’t know where San Pedro is. At that point, I wasn’t a person who went on holidays to beautiful islands. I may have been on the way to the studio and seen an exit ramp for San Pedro.
