I think we’ve become really close, having toured together and become friends and co-hosting the CMAs for several years. We just get along great and sing great together. She’s probably pretty much my first choice to sing with when it comes to a duet with a woman like that. I mean, we just sort of share the same values and get along that well. And also, I just don’t think there’s a better singer than her, so it’s sort of selfish to be able to sing with her and perform. Every take sounded like that [the final recording]

deals with a love affair with water that began with an inflatable pool and grew to bigger bodies of water, and eventually all the things that you can do around water that you can’t get away with anywhere else. My songs are certainly influenced by how I see the world through other sets of eyes as well as my own.

Huck was three days early. Which is appropriate. He’s not a laid-back kid. He’s a go-getter. He’s ready to go when he gets up. A “very animated, fiery and dramatic” child.
Welcome To The Future
The artist releases his single, Welcome To The Future, from his album, American Saturday Night.
I’m always striving for that moment where I feel like I did something the best I could do it, and I feel like with this song, I did that. I feel like the production is perfect for the song. There’s three things I wanted to do. I wanted to show this world through my eyes, my kids’ eyes, and my granddad’s eyes, with this look of hope. First of all, if you wanna blow the mind of a 10 year old in 1982, which was me, you go back and you take your iPhone and show him Pac-Man on it. You would have seen me spontaneously combust. I would have lost my mind. And then you want to do the same thing to my grandfather, go back to 1941 in the Phillippines and tell him, ‘Hang in there when the air raid sirens and kamikaze pilots are going off, it’ll be fine. Your grandson’s gonna play Japan twice on tour.’ He would have thought you were out of your mind. And then there’s my kids, who are gonna be like, ‘Dad, what’s the big deal? Yeah, the President’s black’.

Waitin’ On A Woman
The artist releases his single, Waitin’ On A Woman, from his album, 5th Gear. Co-writer, Varble:
A buddy of mine told me about a friend of ours who was in the hospital and wasn’t doing well at all. After I hung up with him, I talked to the guy and asked how he was doing. He was in his last days, and I asked him where his wife was. He said he told her to go home, that there was nothing she could do there. That title came to mind, and that little story, the outline of it.
Don [Sampson] and I had started a song the week before that we were going to finish, but Don said, ‘Shoot, let’s write this instead of that other one.’ We finished it in one day. That afternoon, I went to town to play it for one of my song pluggers down there, Cris Lacy. She hears a million songs, and I looked up at her afterwards, and she had tears down her face. I told Don, ‘I think we have something if it got through Cris Lacy’s hard shell.’ About a week later, somebody at Brad Paisley’s company played it for him, and he put it on hold, and the rest is history.
Wins Grammy

Letter To Me
The artist releases Letter To Me, from, 5th Gear.
There’s a line in the song that says, ‘And you should really thank Mrs. Brinkman.’ She was – and still is – the speech teacher at John Marshall High School. She told me, ‘You have to take this class. When you get up with a guitar you’re fine. But you need to know how to talk in any situation to a group of people if you really want to do this for a living.’ It was a pivotal time in my life.
Online
The artist releases Online, from the album, 5th Gear.
I remember thinking, ‘Well, the internet is sort of new, and people are getting away with complete false identities everywhere you look… It isn’t going to be this way forever; but this’ll be fun to put out right now. Boy, was I wrong. I think it’s way more relevant today.
Ticks
The artist releases Ticks, from his album, 5th Gear. When asked about writing humorous songs:
I think it’s all in the timing. It’s like fishing. It’s baiting the hook and knowing when to set it. In ‘Ticks’ you bait them and go all the way down the chorus to ‘I’d like to walk you through a field of wild flowers.’ I could have ended it then with ‘So let’s take a drive’ (laughs). But that’s not setting the hook. After ‘I’d like to walk you through a field of wildflowers’ the ball is sitting on the T, so you swing and give it a line like ‘And I’d like to check you for ticks.

I’m Gonna Miss Her
The artist releases I’m Gonna Miss Her, from Part II. When asked if he is concerned that some of his songs that are written from a male perspective aren’t universal enough:
I’ve found that with songs like that – a good example is I’m Gonna Miss Her – those are the ones that seem to get the biggest rise out of women. I think it’s because women see right through a song that attempts at saying, ‘You’re perfect, you’re this, you’re that’. It’s got to be really heartfelt because female intuition is really difficult to pass by if it’s not sincere. They have radar when it comes to things like that. But when you’re writing from the perspective of a man, it’s truly easier to get past that radar.
