While I have received a number of awards, this is really different. This is something that’s going to be there and my grandkids and my great grandkids can come and see.

It was what has given me the strength and courage to live this extraordinary life and it is what powers the light that burns inside of me, bright enough for me to be honored today with this star on the Walk of Fame. It will be cool to be under people’s feet. It really is the place where people can understand exactly that actors are not really stars – they don’t exist in the sky, they exist on the ground just like everybody else.

To be considered a star is one thing, but to be embedded in the sidewalk with life passing over us, that for me is the best part of this honor. Five-inch heels, flip-flops, Birkenstocks, dropped ice cream cones, the odd tobacco squirt, baby carriages, roller blades, skateboards, wheelchairs –– bring it all on.

This is utterly incredible to me. I mean, the iconography of this is not only famous in this country but around the world and location, location, location! I thought I would be outside the men’s urinals five miles from here, but I’m outside The Egyptian, which is also incredible to me.

I was so excited about my star that honestly, last night, my assistant and I were going to the Art Life for a Q&A and we had a little time and I said, “Let’s drive by the Egyptian Theater”, so I can see where the star is.

I couldn’t catch my breath. I started crying. Another flight attendant thought someone had died. Later, the captain came out and announced to the plane, ‘Kate Linder, your purser, is receiving a star on the Walk of Fame.’ Everyone applauded and cheered.

Who would have thought that a little girl in pigtails from St. Petersburg, Florida, would grow up to find herself gazing at a star with her name on it, on the Hollywood Walk of Fame? This day is so, so special to me.

The thought of her with Johnny Grant really makes me feel better. And it was Johnny who said to me not three and a half months ago, ‘Suzie doesn’t have a star. We ought to do something about that.’ And we were shot out of a cannon, and thanks to Johnny, who was always doing something good for somebody, and I’m sure he still is, we got this on the fast track.
