U.S. evacuates embassy staff
The U.S. says it is evacuating some staff from its embassy in Baghdad and increasing security measures, as several car bomb explosions hit the capital and ISIS releases photographs appearing to show massacres of captured Iraqi soldiers. An undisclosed number of staffers will be moved to Amman, Jordan, or U.S. consulates elsewhere in Iraq not immediately threatened by ISIS. The embassy, inside the Green Zone, will remain fully operational with ‘some additional U.S. government personnel.’ The State Department warns citizens to avoid all but essential travel:
Travel within Iraq remains dangerous given the security situation.
