Charged with murder
Marquez and Monroy are arraigned consecutively in Sacramento Superior Court under tight security, with five deputies posted at the door of Judge Gweon’s courtroom, three more surrounding the steel arraignment cage, and three more inside with the suspects. Marquez is arraigned on 14 felony counts ranging from the murder of two deputies to carjacking and possession of weapons by a felon. He is named in five special circumstances that could lead prosecutors to seek the death penalty, although a decision hasn’t been made yet. Five-foot, seven-inch, 175-pound Marquez enters the cage in shackles and hears the charges via a Spanish translator. Media aren’t allowed to photograph his face.
