I think it worked so easily because Sam is a very rare person. He’s very rare because he’s not afraid to let people see who he is. His vulnerability is what draws me to him; he’s just honest and real. I love that. I can really work with people like that.
Glamour interview
Ahead of her appearance at the Brit Awards, Blige chats to Glamour UK about British soul singer, Sam Smith.
Sam is just unlike a lot of new artists. He has so much humility, he’s so grateful and he’s still so taken back from all of this but at the same time he’s very confident and decisive. I’ve watched him be so decisive and I love that about him – I’m like ‘I wanna be like that’ (laughs).

Mary J. Blige interview
Seacrest interviews Blige during On Air With Ryan Seacrest about working on her latest album The London Sessions.
The intent was just to have a complete new environment along with the new thought process that I had along with my career. I just felt like I was getting stale in my own career as an artist, and I needed to completely do something different. So when I started feeling like that, I kind of just discovered Disclosure‘s [‘F for U’], on VEVO. I discovered it and I completely lost my mind over how good it felt. Like, ‘Who are these kids?’ And I felt compelled to be on the remix. Whatever the remix is The idea was to go to London and do an EP with them when I discovered that I sound good singing club music.

Wins Grammy
Blige wins Grammy for Best Contemporary R&B Album for Growing Pains.
It was years of painfulness to get to this point. But once you’ve been going through so much self-hatred and stuff for so long, you get to that point and you say, “Gosh, am I good enough?” And then something says — and this is the growth — yes, you are. And that’s why I named the album Growing Pains because it was that moment that I realized, you know what, it’s going to take a lot more growing and a lot more pain to sustain this breakthrough.

O Magazine interview
Blige gives an interview to Winfrey for O Magazine about the meaning of her album The Breakthrough.
It means a lot. One day I realized that I wasn’t getting anywhere by blaming other people for my circumstances. I finally understood: Even if you feel someone has wronged you or owes you something, no one is going to give you anything for free. In the inner city, there’s a mentality that the government owes you something. My breakthrough came when I stopped feeling sorry for myself and took responsibility for every part of my life. No more pity parties. I’ve gotta love me more than anybody else loves me.
