In the Riverlands, Lady Catelyn visits Jaime as he is held captive by her son, Robb Stark. He taunts her about the death of her husband, Lord Eddard Stark, and she strikes his head with a rock. Jaime tells her that he doesn’t fear death, but Lady Catelyn refuses to strike him again. He admits to pushing her son, Bran Stark, from a tower at the Stark family stronghold and crippling him, but does not reveal the secret that Bran had discovered.

At the edge of the Riverlands in the centre of Westeros, Lord Tywin has assembled an army to oppose the Stark noble family, headed by Lord Eddard, and the Tully noble family of his wife, Lady Catelyn, for the capture of his youngest son Tyrion. He tells Jaime that the war will determine whether the Lannister family becomes a dynasty that will last a thousand years, or cease to exist. He orders Jaime to take 30,000 men to attack the Tully stronghold Riverrun in order to make Jaime a leader and restore the Lannister family’s honor.

The Wolf and the Lion

Coster-Waldau appears as Ser Jaime Lannister in the fifth episode of Game of Thrones, The Wolf and the Lion. Sean Bean plays Lord Eddard ‘Ned’ Stark, the Hand of the King. In King’s Landing, Jaime learns that his brother has been taken captive by Lady Catelyn Stark for his suspected involvement in an attempt to murder her son. Knowing that Ned has resigned his position and lost the backing of the king, Jaime and a group of Lannister guardsmen confront Ned and his retainers. Realizing that killing Ned would endanger his brother, Jaime has his guards kill the Stark soldiers, killing one himself with a dagger. He faces Ned in hand-to-hand combat and is surprised by Ned’s strength and skill. As they fight, a Lannister man attacks Ned from behind with a spear, injuring his leg. With Ned unable to continue, the duel ends.

At King’s Landing, Lord Eddard displays his disdain for Jaime for killing former king Aerys Targaryen while serving in the kingsguard. Jaime responds that Aerys had murdered Lord Eddard’s father and brother. The court learns that Lord Eddard’s second son, Bran Stark, has regained consciousness after falling from a tower at his family’s stronghold, and Cersei is concerned that he will reveal her and Jaime’s role in the fall. Jaime tells Cersei that if this is revealed, he will gladly go to war until only the two of them remain alive. Questioned by King Robert over Aerys’s death, Jaime replies that the former king was a murderous madman.

Winter is Coming

Isaac Hempstead-Wright plays Bran, the second son of the Stark noble family. In King’s Landing, Jaime and Cersei watch the body of Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, being prepared for burial after his mysterious death. Cersei worries that before he died, Jon learned a secret she and Jaime share. Jaime assures her that if he did know, he told noone, or they would both already be dead. The royal party travels north to the Stark stronghold Winterfell, where King Robert Baratheon plans to appoint his friend and advisor Lord Eddard Stark as Hand. As Bran climbs one of Winterfell’s towers, he hears noises from a disused chamber. Looking through the window, he sees Cersei and Jaime engaged in incestuous sex. Realizing they have been seen, Jaime pulls Bran into the window and questions him on his age. Realizing that the 10-year-old Bran is old enough to understand what he saw, Jaime pushes him from the window.
