It’s impossible to not go to work carrying 5 and 1 and the 12 years with you. This one, the process has been a bit different. We’ve been spending a lot more time tweaking as we go. When we first made it I thought that this would be a fun journey, but I didn’t know if anyone would see it because it’s definitely not a commercial movie. It was pretty selfish; it was something I wanted to prove to myself. During filming, my agent asked me how it was going and I told him that I was telling the truth the entire time and there was only one or two times where I didn’t actually believe what I was doing and that’s when I told Eric (Heisserer, the film’s director) to scratch the take. If they don’t like this, then they don’t like me.

I think it depicts war for what it really is. These guys are now like brothers. They go off, they fight, their best friend dies right next to them. They don’t have time to cry about it, they gotta push forward…What the story’s really about is the unsung heroes, the guys that raised the first flag – all of whom were basically killed by the time that famous photograph made it back to the States.
