He disciplines his royal nephew Joffrey Baratheon, played by Jack Gleeson, for failing to pay his sympathies to the noble Stark family following the critical injury of their son Bran, due to the family’s rivalry with the Lannisters. He then informs his sister and brother, Cersei and Jaime, played by Lena Headey and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, that he intends to travel north from the Stark family stronghold Winterfell to the Wall of Westeros on the northern edge of the continent. He hints that he is aware of Cersei and Jaime’s involvement in the fall that injured Bran.

Visiting the Wall of Westeros on the northern edge of the Seven Kingdoms, Tyrion is accused in absentia of involvement in an assassination attempt on Bran Stark, the son of a rival noble family. Unaware of the accusations against him, he agrees to intercede on behalf of the Night’s Watch for more men to protect the Wall when he returns to the capital, King’s Landing.

Tyrion visits the stronghold of the rival Stark noble family on his way south from the Wall of Westeros and gives Bran Stark, played by Isaac Hempstead-Wright, a device that will allow Bran to ride a horse again after his paraplegic injury. Traveling south towards the capital of King’s Landing, Tyrion is captured by Lady Catelyn Stark, played by Michelle Fairley, who suspects him of attempting to murder Bran Stark. He also encounters Bronn, a mercenary played by Jerome Flynn.

The Wolf and the Lion

He claims that he is innocent of the attempted assassination of her son Bran, and attempts to attract the attention of the mercenary Bronn, played by Jerome Flynn, by stating that his father Tywin Lannister will pay a reward for his release. The group are forced to fight when they are attacked by raiding hill tribes.

At  the Eyrie, the stronghold of the Arrin noble family, Tyrion is tried for the attempted assassination of Bran Stark. As the Arrin and Stark families are related by marriage, he determines that he will not receive a fair hearing and demands a trial by combat. The mercenary Bronn, played by Jerome Flynn, makes a calculated decision to represent Tyrion in the trial, realizing that he will be rewarded by the Lannister family’s wealth. He uses defensive fighting tactics to defeat a better trained and more heavily armed opponent.

In the eastern Vale region of the continent of Westeros, Tyrion and Bronn are menaced by hill tribes. Tyrion manages to convince the tribesmen that his wealthy family will give them weapons to fight the noble families that rule the region in exchange for safeguarding him. They escort Tyrion and Bronn westwards to where the Lannister armies are located.

Lord Tywin Lannister, played by Charles Dance, informs Tyrion that he plans to use Tyrion’s group of hill tribesmen at the vanguard of an impending battle with the armies of the Stark noble family. Tyrion deduces that Tywin is trying to have him killed. At Tyrion’s request the mercenary Bronn, played by Jerome Flynn, procures the services of the prostitute Shae, played by Sibil Kekilli. A stroke of luck saves Tyrion from dying in the battle.

The Lannister military commanders realize they are fighting a battle on two fronts, against armies led by the Stark noble house to the north and the Baratheon house to the south. Tywin is impressed when Tyrion correctly assesses that they will not be able to make peace with the Starks. He appoints Tyrion to act as Hand of the King for his nephew, Joffrey Baratheon, but says that he must leave Shae behind when he travels to King’s Landing.

Tyrion criticizes her for failing to control her son Joffrey Baratheon, who is now king and has started a war that the Lannisters are losing.

In King’s Landing, Varys has discovered that Shae is living with Tyrion and threatens to reveal her presence. At a meeting of the king’s Small Council, Cersei rejects terms offered by the northern Stark armies. A message from the Night’s Watch warns the council that undead creatures are threatening the Wall of Westeros at the north of the continent. Tyrion confronts the commander of the City Watch over his betrayal of the previous Hand of the King, Lord Eddard Stark, and removes him from his post. He replaces him with his bodyguard, the mercenary Bronn, played by Jerome Flynn.

Sophie Turner plays Sansa Stark, the oldest daughter of the noble family that is the Lannisters’ main rival. Tyrion’s bodyguard, the mercenary Bronn, is played by Jerome Flynn. Joffrey publicly humiliates Sansa, who he is betrothed to marry, after Sansa’s older brother Robb defeats Lannister armies in battle, until Tyrion intervenes to save her. Tyrion and Bronn decide that Joffrey is sexually frustrated as he is still a virgin. In an attempt to act as masculine role models, they send two prostitutes to his bedchamber, however Joffrey threatens the women with a crossbow and sadistically tortures them.

He discovers that Queen Regent Cersei Lannister, played by Lena Headey, has prepared a magical substance known as wildfire, which could devastate an attacker but could also burn the city. He orders the pyromancer who prepared to substance to report to him on defense plans.

At the royal stronghold, Joffrey refuses to send his men back out to find Sansa, who has been lost in the confusion. Tyrion harshly berates him for his stupidity. Sansa is rescued from a violent mob by The Hound moments before she was about to be brutalized.

The armies of Stannis Baratheon, played by Stephen Dillane, attack King’s Landing in a bid to place Stannis on the Iron Throne. Tyrion destroys Stannis’s fleet using a magical substance known as wildfire. Stannis and some of his men are able to land and storm a city gate. King Joffrey Baratheon, played by Jack Gleeson, shows cowardice and retreats from the front lines, leaving Tyrion to lead the defenses. As Tyrion leads the city’s small band of kingsguards and City Watchmen on a sortie outside the walls, a Lannister soldier turns on him in an apparent murder attempt, but he is saved by his squire. As defeat looks certain, a Lannister army arrives to save the city.
