Serena beats sister in U.S. Open

Match Report

Serena wins the U.S. Open quarterfinal against her sister Venus. 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. Serena is 16-11 in their all-in-the-family matches, including 9-5 in majors and 3-2 at the U.S. Open. Serena:

Obviously we are very, very tough competitors on the court, but once the match is over, the second it’s done, you know, we’re sisters, we’re roommates, and we’re all that.

Coach Mouratoglou:

They both played their best. If they were feeling uncomfortable with playing each other, they could not play at that level.

Hits back at Russian official

Williams says comments by the head of the Russian Tennis Federation referring to her and older sister Venus as “brothers” were bullying, sexist and racist, and that she supported the one-year suspension imposed by the WTA against the official. Shamil Tarpischev was also fined $25,000 for making the comments on Russian television. He also said the sisters were “scary” to look at.

I think the WTA did a great job of taking (the) initiative and taking immediate action to his comments.I thought they were very insensitive and extremely sexist as well as racist at the same time. I thought they were in a way bullying.

Advances to semi-final

Williams recovers from a slow start to beat Flavia Penneta and make it to the semi-finals with a 6-3 6-2 game. Williams has not lost more than three games in any set the tournament.

I felt she was playing really well, I don’t feel I was doing too much wrong (in the first three games). I just said to myself that if she keeps it up then she absolutely deserves the win and I just tried to do a little better. I had a lot of fun today, I really enjoyed it and I’m so happy to have won.

Withdraws from doubles match

Williams struggles through a doubles match with her sister Venus against competitors Kristina Barrois and Stefanie Vögeleas.  A stomach virus has left her very vulnerable and out of energy.

I decided not to play in Bastad, because I am still not feeling 100%. I want to be in perfect condition to go back on court, but unfortunately it’s not the case. I really hope to be able to get back to training from next week, Williams issued a statement after her withdrawal from Bastad.

O Magazine interview

Williams talks about playing against her older sister Venus when she was growing up in an interview with O Magazine.

When we were younger, it was difficult for me to play Venus because she’d always beat me so badly. I had to improve just so I could stay in the game. Even now when we practice together, I have to watch out because she’ll just blow me off the court.
