They showed a clip where my character is in the bathroom and I take my top off. It’s on public television and that’s the clip they showed. When they showed it I was expecting the audience to react, but they were like, ‘Whatever. It’s just boobs.’

Hollywood Reporter interview

Interview0 Comments

Woodley shares her thoughts on losing ones virginity in an interview with Hollywood Reporter while promoting her new film White Bird in a Blizzard. Woodley talks about how she tries to make the moment real for the viewer.

One of the things I have been very keen on in doing those scenes is that they feel real because, I don’t know about you, but I do not personally think losing your virginity is a fun experience. It’s not glamorous — for some people, I think it is, but it wasn’t for a lot of people on this planet — so for me, it was a matter of, if we’re gonna do a scene that deals with that, it’s not gonna be, ‘Her back arches and she gasps in excitement.’ No, no, it’s gonna be messy and it’s gonna be real.

Shailene Woodley interview

Seacrest interviews Woodley during On Air With Ryan Seacrest and questions her about her role in the film The Fault in Our Stars.

You’re definitely laughing, you’re definitely crying. It’s really beautiful even to find that balance between grieving over the loss of someone and also celebrating life. Those are two things that often go hand-in-hand without us recognizing it or realizing it. And that’s one thing that I truly love about that story.

Time interview

Interview0 Comments

Woodley is interviewed for Time and discusses whether she considers herself a feminist:

No because I love men, and I think the idea of ‘raise women to power, take the men away from the power’ is never going to work out because you need balance. With myself, I’m very in touch with my masculine side. And I’m 50 percent feminine and 50 percent masculine, same as I think a lot of us are.

New York Times interview

Interview0 Comments

Woodley is interviewed for the New York Times about her passion for the role in The Fault In Our Stars, being a child actress, and life in Hollywood:

Everyone says to me, ‘What does it feel like to be part of the Hollywood life now?’  And I want to say, ‘It’s fabricated.’ None of it’s real. We all go to these events. We put on makeup and clothes that aren’t ours. We give them back at the end of the night, and then we go home and burp the same garlic burps as everyone else. You still have to do your laundry, and your dishes are everywhere. It’s just life.”

NPR interview

Interview0 Comments

Woodley tells NPR that she doesn’t analyze scripts or look for her characters’ motivation when playing a role:

I don’t really work that way. For me, it’s about being fully present and actively listening to every single thing that’s going on around me and reacting to it. Because I feel the second I premeditate something, it’s going to feel premeditated.

Shailene Woodley interview

Interview0 Comments

Seacrest interviews Woodley during On Air With Ryan Seacrest and questions her about her role in the film Divergent.

It’s complicated. There’s the idea it’s about a girl who switches factions and has to make a choice for herself and then deal with the consequences of her choices. But it also deals with warfare and it deals with one society taking over another society there are so many different themes and story-lines interwoven.

TV Chick interview

Interview0 Comments

Woodley gives an interview to TV Chick about the way The Secret Life Of The American Teenager approaches sex:

Having been in high school three years ago, it’s definitely a big issue. Kids are having sex with other kids and not really paying attention to the consequences. So I think it’s important — whatever your decision is, if you decide to be sexually active that’s totally fine, just make sure you protect yourself and make sure you’re safe about it because if you do get an STD, you have it for the rest of your life. And if you have a child, you have that for the rest of your life as well.

TV Chick interview

Woodley talks with TV Chick about relaxing on set, her favorite TV shows, and the impact her Secret Life character has:

Feedback that we’ve got from parents who have come up to us and said like, “Wow, this shows opened such incredible avenues for me and my children to communicate.” I grew up in a very open household where if I had a question about anything, I could ask my parents, and they would answer me truthfully and not hold anything back.  I think that really helped me as a child know exactly what everything was.

Crushable interview

Interview0 Comments

Woodley is interviewed for Crushable about Secret Life and whether becoming famous has changed things:

I don’t put myself out there. I barely wear any makeup. I just feel like I’ve kind of taken on the responsibility of being a professional. It’s always awkward for me the whole fan situation, because I don’t know them and they don’t know me, so I want to engage in conversation, but then that’s always awkward too.  It’s a very interesting dynamic, but other than that life has just been the same.  I’ve stayed with the same friends and have the most amazing family ever, so I’ve been very lucky.

Seventeen interview

Interview0 Comments

Woodley talks to Seventeen about the serious messages of Secret Life Of The American Teenager, and about teen body issues:

I grew now but I was like super-short growing up. I was always the runt and now I’m like towering over everyone. But my family – we all just have like fast metabolisms, so we’re all lanky. I’m always like “I’m too skinny, I can’t gain weight, even when I try.” I’d like to try to not let that get to me.

Sugar Slam interview

Interview0 Comments

Woodley talks with Sugar Slam about being a famous teenager and whether she can still do normal things like go to the mall:

Oh, definitely. I still actually only go back on hiatus in February. I’m going to go back to my high school and graduate because I’m a junior. It’s definitely different. When you go to a grocery store and you go anywhere there are people staring or pointing or whispering, and every now and then you have a brave girl come up and be like, “Are you the girl from Secret Life?” It’s neat to have that happen, but it’s also a little bit awkward because I feel like I should have a conversation with them, like, “Hello, I’m Shai. What’s your name?” versus just being like, “Oh, yes. Here’s my autograph. Bye.”
