ABC Family releases a 60-second promo for the show ahead of the premiere.
Woodley stars in the first season of the teen drama as a 16-year-old student at Grant High who is forced to deal with teen pregnancy.
My character, Amy Juergens, she is a go-getter, she’s excited for life, she wants to go to Julliard, she has all these amazing goals. And then she finds out she’s pregnant, and her world kind of comes crashing down and her sense of optimism turns to pessimism. And she freaks out, because all she’s ever known has been completely turned upside down. And she has no one to go to to talk to about her pregnancy. So it’s definitely a hard time in her life.
Woodley does a cast interview for The Secret Life of the American Teenager on The Ellen Show.
It makes you think, “Oh my gosh, there are 16-year-olds and 15-year-olds who get pregnant” … It’s really weird wearing a pad and looking in the mirror and going, “Oh my God, I’m pregnant.”
Woodley talks with Sugar Slam about being a famous teenager and whether she can still do normal things like go to the mall:
Oh, definitely. I still actually only go back on hiatus in February. I’m going to go back to my high school and graduate because I’m a junior. It’s definitely different. When you go to a grocery store and you go anywhere there are people staring or pointing or whispering, and every now and then you have a brave girl come up and be like, “Are you the girl from Secret Life?” It’s neat to have that happen, but it’s also a little bit awkward because I feel like I should have a conversation with them, like, “Hello, I’m Shai. What’s your name?” versus just being like, “Oh, yes. Here’s my autograph. Bye.”
Woodley talks to Seventeen about the serious messages of Secret Life Of The American Teenager, and about teen body issues:
I grew now but I was like super-short growing up. I was always the runt and now I’m like towering over everyone. But my family – we all just have like fast metabolisms, so we’re all lanky. I’m always like “I’m too skinny, I can’t gain weight, even when I try.” I’d like to try to not let that get to me.
Woodley gives an interview to Teen Hollywood about her time on The Secret Life Of The American Teen and her advice for surviving high school.
I think stay true to yourself and do what you believe in and don’t get affected by peer pressure.
Woodley stars in the show’s second season. Woodley’s character, Amy Juergens, juggles love interests, friendships and school with being a mother. The season features co-star Jason Baumann as Ben Boykewich.
Well there’s thought about marriage, a wedding between her and Ben. And she has the baby, and tries to figure out what she’s going to do with it.
Woodley is interviewed for Crushable about Secret Life and whether becoming famous has changed things:
I don’t put myself out there. I barely wear any makeup. I just feel like I’ve kind of taken on the responsibility of being a professional. It’s always awkward for me the whole fan situation, because I don’t know them and they don’t know me, so I want to engage in conversation, but then that’s always awkward too. It’s a very interesting dynamic, but other than that life has just been the same. I’ve stayed with the same friends and have the most amazing family ever, so I’ve been very lucky.
Woodley talks with TV Chick about relaxing on set, her favorite TV shows, and the impact her Secret Life character has:
Feedback that we’ve got from parents who have come up to us and said like, “Wow, this shows opened such incredible avenues for me and my children to communicate.” I grew up in a very open household where if I had a question about anything, I could ask my parents, and they would answer me truthfully and not hold anything back. I think that really helped me as a child know exactly what everything was.
Woodley appears on the cover of the May 2010 issue of Seventeen magazine. She talks about this being her first Seventeen cover and about fashion.
What we got to use, it was me, but it wasn’t. It was kind of like the alter-ego me. It was awesome.
Woodley stars as teen mother Amy Juergens in the third season of the drama. Co-starring Darren Kagasoff as Ricky Underwood and Ken Baumann as Ben Boykewich. Woodley talks about the new season:
There’s a lot of new things. Another maybe pregnancy, weddings; there’s a lot of confusion as far as in Ben and Amy’s relationship; there’s a lot of up and downs with Ricky’s character and trying to figure out who he is and what he wants.
Woodley gives an interview to TV Chick about the way The Secret Life Of The American Teenager approaches sex:
Having been in high school three years ago, it’s definitely a big issue. Kids are having sex with other kids and not really paying attention to the consequences. So I think it’s important — whatever your decision is, if you decide to be sexually active that’s totally fine, just make sure you protect yourself and make sure you’re safe about it because if you do get an STD, you have it for the rest of your life. And if you have a child, you have that for the rest of your life as well.
Woodley stars as teen mother Amy Juergens in the drama’s fourth season. Co-starring Darren Kagasoff as Ricky Underwood and Ken Baumann as Ben Boykewich. On the season premiere:
Oh my gosh, so much drama, so many secrets. There could possibly be a marriage, there could possibly be someone falling in love, someone might fall out of love, someone might move in with someone else, so there’s a lot going on.
Woodley is interviewed for The Hollywood Reporter about going from working on teen dramas such as The Secret Life Of The American Teenager to acting alongside George Clooney in The Descendants:
It’s been this ladder that I’ve been climbing up, and I’m still climbing!
Woodley plays Alexandra King in the Alexander Payne adaptation of the novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings. As her father struggles to sell a land estate and save his fortune and her mother lies in a coma, the troubled 17-year-old comes to terms with her dysfunctional family.
George [Clooney] told me the night of that scene that the key to being drunk is to pretend like you’re not drunk. When you’re drunk and someone says, ‘Ha, you’re wasted,’ you say ‘I’m not drunk — I’m not even buzzed’ even though you’re belligerent.
Woodley appears on the cover of the January/February 2012 issue of Coco Eco magazine. She talks about her passion for the eco-system, on believing what will be will be, and her lifelong goals.
Our population is so large, and there hasn’t been a company or an organization that has stepped up and provided organic food to people on a lower income level. So one of my goals in life is to start a giant organic, biodynamic farm and have it fun like a community, but sell the produce for less than conventional prices. I think the education is an important element for me too.
Woodley is featured in LA Confidential as one of the actors who made a difference during the year.
I love to act—the expression and the creation of it. But the day it becomes not fun, then I’ll quit. It’s only about giving me those butterflies, and if I don’t have those… It’s not about the glamour and the makeup and the dresses and the red carpets—for me, it’s about being on a film set, in front of a camera, and being able to portray myself as any given character.
Woodley appears on the cover of the March 2012 issue of Malibu magazine. She talks about taking acting classes and dressing up.
No, I’m not a girlie girl at all. I never wear dresses. I’m always in either long, baggy skirts that I can still do ‘crisscross applesauce’ in, or blue jeans. I’m very lucky to work with a stylist who cares about fashion, because I don’t at all. And I’m very lucky to have a makeup artist and hair guy who are really good at what they do, because I would go to events with no makeup and no hair and in pajamas if I could.
Woodley appears on the cover of the June 2012 issue of ASOS magazine. She talks about not paying attention to fame, criticism on her Oscar dress, and looking towards being in movies.
Movies are where my heart is at. I love dark roles – roles that appear scary. Not in a horror film way, but like ‘Black Swan’ or ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.’ Films that take the audience on an emotional journey. And I would love to play Patti Smith in a film one day – I’m re-reading her autobiography, I’m obsessed with it.
