King publishes his first novel under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. Rage is about a Maine high school student who conducts a school shooting. The book was later associated with actual high school shooting incidents in the 1980’s and 1990’s. King allowed the novel to fall out of print after four school shooters cited owning the book. In the wake of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Sandy Hook, Connecticut, King explained in his e-book, guns:
My book did not break [these teenagers] or turn them into killers; they found something in my book that spoke to them, because they were already broken. Yet I did see Rage as a possible accelerant, which is why I pulled it from sale. You don’t leave a can of gasoline where a boy with firebug tendencies can lay hands on it.
