King publishes his second novel through Doubleday publishing, ‘Salem’s Lot, about a writer who returns to his childhood town in Maine, Jerusalem’s Lot, to find the residents have all become vampires. King had originally chosen the title Second Coming for his book, but changed it after his wife mused that it sounded like a “bad sex story”. King later told The Highway Patrolman magazine:
In a way, it is my favorite story, mostly because of what it says about small towns. They are kind of a dying organism right now. The story seems sort of down home to me. I have a special cold spot in my heart for it!
