Tottenham Hotspur FC are a professional football team based in North London. Formed in 1882 by members of the Hotspur cricket club, the ‘Lilywhites’ became the first (and still only) non-league club to win the F.A. Cup in 1901. Bill Nicholson’s ‘Spurs’ became the first team in the 20th century to do the ‘Double’ in 1961 when they won the League Championship and F.A. Cup in the same season. In 1963 Spurs became the first British team to win a major European trophy when they defeated Atletico Madrid 5-1 in the final of the European Cup Winners Cup. In total, Spurs have won 2 League Championships, 8 F.A. Cups, 4 League Cups, 2 UEFA Cups and the European Cup Winners Cup.

Tottenham Hotspur overwhelm London rivals Chelsea in the first League Cup Final to be played at the new Wembley. A penalty from Dimitar Berbatov and a header in extra time by Jonathan Woodgate ensure bragging rights for Spurs. Ledley King and Robbie Keane lift the trophy for Spurs.

13Blackburn Rovers stun hot favourites Tottenham Hotspur with a 2-1 victory at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium. A crowd of 72,500 see Andrew Cole hit the second half winner for the Lancashire outfit. Teddy Sheringham is denied a clear penalty by referee Graham Poll in the final seconds.

Super Spurs win their third League Cup thanks to a diving header by the Dane, Alan Nielsen in the last minute of extra time.  Spurs’ Justin Edinburgh becomes the first player to be sent off in a League Cup Final for doing what millions have wanted to do for years, slapping Leicester’s Robbie Savage.

Spurs come agonisingly close to winning their third League Cup after an 11th minute opportunist strike from Steve Archibald. A Ronnie Whelan strike in the 87th minute forces extra time, during which Whelan gets his second and Ian Rush seals the victory for the Reds.

Spurs win their second League Cup in three years thanks to a long range strike from Ralph Coates in the 72nd minute. As in their first League Cup win two years earlier, a record crowd of 100,000 fill Wembley Stadium.  Spurs now have a record five wins out of five under the famous twin towers.
