We had a beef, I guess you would say. I don’t know if that’s the word the kids use. It’s not really a beef — I just called him some really mean things on social media for no real reason. And I only met him very briefly. I finally saw him today in the hallway of your show and I guess we made up, which is fantastic. It’s all my fault. It’s all just cause I decided to be mean one day for no reason whatso ever.

In an interview with DeGeneres on The Ellen Show, Damon defends comments he made in The Guardian about gay actors.
I was just trying to say actors are more effective when they’re a mystery. Right? And somebody picked it up and said I said gay actors should get back in the closet. Which is like I mean it’s stupid, but it is painful when things get said that you don’t believe…In the blogosphere there’s no real penalty for just taking the ball and running with it,” Damon said. “You know what I mean? It’s a story about love, and family, and friendships. And it’s Elisha Cuthbert, who is adorable and funny, and Nick Zano are best friends and have been childhood friends and they decided if they don’t have significant others by a certain age, he’s going to help her get pregnant because she’s gay and she doesn’t have someone in her life and she wants to have a kid…They’re going to raise a child together; all three of them. So it’s funny and it’s sweet and it’s great that NBC picked it up because it’s something that’s on television that is brand new and people have not seen this before. And there are a lot of ways to define a family.

I don’t know if you’ve seen the movie Selma, but the thing that changed the civil rights movement is when white people got involved and started marching, because until then, it was just nothing but violence and disaster, and it continued to be for a while. We need everyone on our side. We’re kind of trying to do this march, and we just need people that believe in equality and believe in fairness and love. So if we have people that will join us and give us that, which is only fair to have the same rights that everybody else has, then it’s a wonderful world.
