In a letter read at a Vatican conference in Mexico City on human migration and development, Francis says migration “has now become a hallmark of our society and a challenge.” The Pope says immigrants:
continue to be the subject of racist and xenophobic attitudes…Many people forced to emigrate suffer, and often die, tragically; many of their rights are violated, they are obliged to separate from their families and, unfortunately, continue to be the subject of racist and xenophobic attitudes.
Four escape downed plane
Four crew members escape and two others on board are taken as hostages from the transport plane that was shot down near the Russian border this week. Two people remain missing. All of the people that were on the plane are Ukrainians. The Defense Ministry says the four who escaped “are in a safe location.”
Tangible progress on key issues
Speaking at negotiations in Vienna, Austria, where Iran and world powers are meeting over Iran’s nuclear program, Kerry tells reporters there have been “tangible progress on key issues,” but negotiators have yet to arrive at a “workable formula.” Despite differences, Kerry believes there is a way to make this work ahead.
But and this is a critical point while there is a path forward, Iran needs to choose to take it. And our goal now is to determine the precise contours of that path, and I believe we can.
Vincenzo Nibali wins stage 10
After his biggest rival, Alberto Contador, crashes and leaves the race, Nibali wins with a time of 4:27:26. The course starts in Mulhouse and finishes in La Planche des Belles Filles, and is 100.351 miles (161 km). With this win, Nibali regains the overall lead from France’s Tony Gallopin.

Two tracks–Buzzkill(er) and It’s Just Too Bad–and are announced as an upcoming single in White’s Third Man Records Vault series. The songs are part of Vault Package #21, which also includes The White Stripes’ Live Under the Lights of the Rising Sun LP.
Fires two missiles
According to South Korean officials, North Korea fires two missiles into the sea. A South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff official says the projectiles were fired from the North Korean city of Kaesong near the border with the South, and he claims the missiles had a range of about 311 miles. South Korea says the most recent missile firings are the latest in a series of firings seen to be an expression of anger over its failure to win talks on receiving outside aid, and over ongoing U.S.-South Korean military drills.
Final: Germany 1-0 Argentina
Germany wins 1-0 over Argentina, its fourth World Cup win. The game was tied 0-0 at 90 minutes, forcing the game into extra time. Mario Gotze’s strike, seven minutes from the end of extra time, ends Germany’s 24-year wait for the cup.
GOP: No ‘blank check’
Opposing Obama’s request for $3.7 billion dollars to help fix the illegal immigration situation, GOP Rep. Mike McCaul, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, tells Fox News Sunday:
Our view as House Republicans is that we’re not going to write a blank check.
Republicans are suggesting alternative ways to deal with the immediate issues that are much less expensive. McCaul says his caucus is looking at changing a 2008 law that allows children entering the United States from non-bordering countries to remain in this country. He believes the GOP-led House will pass an alternative border security bill before the end of the month.
We have to act soon. It’s a very tragic human crisis at the border, none like I’ve ever seen before.
Tony Martin wins stage nine
The stage nine route spans from Gérardmer to Mulhouse, 105.6 miles (170 km). Martin (OPQS) wins the stage with a time of 4:09:34. Fabian Cancellara (Trek) came in second place just ahead of Greg Van Avermaet (BMC).
Joins world powers for nuclear talks
Kerry arrives in Austria for talks with five other world powers, Germany and Iran concerning Tehran’s nuclear program. The participants are in the final round of negotiations to reach a permanent deal on Iran’s nuclear program before the July 20, 2014 deadline. The talks include the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council: the U.S., UK, France, China and Russia. Germany is also participating in the talks. Kerry states
Obviously, we have some very significant gaps still, so we need to see if we can make some progress. I really look forward to a very substantive and important set of meetings and dialogues. It is vital to make certain that Iran is not going to develop a nuclear weapon, that their program is peaceful.

Released from rehab
Morgan is released from the rehab facility where he has been recovering from injuries sustained in the crash. Morgan’s rep says he will continue to recover at home from a broken leg and broken ribs with an “aggressive outpatient program.”
Kadri wins stage eight
Blel Kadri wins stage eight today, and he is the first Frenchman to win a stage in this year’s race. Alberto Cantador finishes two minutes behind Kadri to take second place. Stage eight starts in Tomblaine and finishes in Gérardmer La Mauselaine, and is just over 100 miles in length (161 km).
It’s an amazing feeling that I have right now. I’m delighted for myself and for the team as well. The main aim for the team was to win a stage — we’ve done that now — and to get the polka-dot jersey too, that’s important as well.
Volunteers sent to help troops
4,00o volunteers are dispatched to help bolster the troops fighting the Sunni militants in Ramadi, a small city west of Baghdad. Gen. Rasheed Flayeh, the commander of operations in Anbar province, says 2,500 of the reinforcements arrived yesterday in Ramadi, and the rest are expected to arrive today. The majority of the volunteers are Shiites answering a call from the country’s top Shiite cleric asking for help in defending the country from the militants who have already seized control of much of northern and western Iraq.
EU names latest sanctions
The European Union extends sanctions to cover 11 leaders of the pro-Moscow rebellion in eastern Ukraine. Targets of the asset freeze and travel ban include two Russian spin doctors, Alexander Borodai, prime minister of the separatist Donetsk People’s Republic, and his counterpart in the Luhansk People’s Republic, Marat Bashirov, both formerly worked for Russian tycoons. Also on the new list were two men identified as rebel military leaders: Nikolai Kozitsyn, commander of Cossack forces, and Alexei Mosgovy, responsible for military training. The names were published today in the EU’s Official Journal; it brought the total of people affected by the EU’s Ukraine-related sanctions to 72, as well as two companies whose EU-based assets have been ordered frozen.
Still training
Tebow is still training for the NFL despite not being on a team. The ex college and former NFL star is back in L.A. to train for NFL tryouts this fall. His regimen will focus on his throwing motion which dispels any rumors that the quarterback will change positions.

Yogscast member Mark Turpin makes a Reddit post announcing YogDiscovery, a new plan for Yogscast members to get paid by game developers to cover their games. The developers agree to give them a small portion of the extra revenue driven by the Yogscast if they make videos about their game. He says this is a way for YouTubers to guarantee income from covering unpopular games:
Our entertainers earn a livelihood from advertising directly based on how many views they get. This motivates them to create content around games that are popular – e.g. Minecraft or Garry’s Mod…YogDiscovery allows them to partially negate the financial risk from playing games that aren’t guaranteed views and be more genuine about playing the games they want to play.
Addresses LULAC in NYC
Obama addresses the League of United Latin American Citizens, the oldest Hispanic organization in the United States, at the LULAC Convention in New York City. Jennifer Lopez was in the building at the time introducing Los Jets, a reality show that she is involved in. The group asked Lopez to stop in for a quick appearance with the First Lady, and she agreed to do so. The two embraced on stage and took time to take a “selfie.”

Raises shipping price to $0.01
After France bans free shipping of books, Amazon raises it shipping price from free to $0.01 Euros, which is one penny. In an FAQ for their shoppers, Amazon explains:
We are unfortunately no longer allowed to offer free deliveries for book orders. We have therefore fixed delivery costs at one centime per order containing books and dispatched by Amazon to systematically guarantee the lowest price for your book orders.
