Justin Randal Timberlake is born to parents Lynn Harless (nee Bomar) and Randall Timberlake. His paternal grandfather is a Baptist minister. His parents divorce when he is only five years old, and both remarry. About his relationship with his mother:
We have a very special relationship. She’s been my best friend since I figured out what I wanted to be. With girls, you keep searching for someone that’s as good as your mum, and that’s a losing battle.

Jive Records releases Timberlake’s debut studio album. Guest vocalists featured on the recording include Janet Jackson, Bubba Sparxxx, and others. The album sells more than 7 million copies worldwide. Timberlake says:
Half of this album is autobiographical and the other half is a fantasy. When I’m in the studio, there are no boundaries. You know, when you’re writing the song, it’s about what goes from the first bar to the last. It’s not about “Oh, am I going to hurt somebody’s feelings?” Right there, you’ve killed the whole thing that’s special about writing.
Timberlake and Jackson sing together during the half-time show at the Superbowl. During the live performance broadcast to 140 million viewers rips off part of Jackson’s costume, leaving her bare breast exposed. Timberlake issues a public apology:

It is an honor just to be in the company I was in.
Timberlake leaves the band to pursue a solo career, after the popular boy band sells over 50 million albums worldwide between 1997 and 2001. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Timberlake explains his decision:
I would wake up every morning feeling this more and more of an urge to step out on my own and try my own hand as a musician just by myself… It was hard to say goodbye to that era, but I felt it changing. I felt music changing. And I felt myself changing.
It’s one of the best/worst things that I have ever done. It was hard to say goodbye to that era, but I felt it changing. I felt music changing. And I felt myself changing.
Timberlake recalls how he was in love with Spears at first sight. After their breakup, Timberlake wrote the song Cry Me A River in attempt to discuss his frustrations about their breakup. When asked if he advised Spears to divorce her husband Federline, Timberlake stated he never gave her that advice and wishes she comes out on top.
When we initially parted ways I felt like she had a couple of opportunities to just sort of stick up for me, and she didn’t. Which is fine. But at that time, you know, I fought back.

When put it out, everybody was laughing at me – critics, radio programmers and to their credit, I understand why. But I wanted to do something different at that time. I wanted to do something that was like, this is like nothing I hear on the radio. That was my effort with that one.
Jackson does not speak to Timberlake anymore after their 2004 Super Bowl performance. After her breast was revealed on national television in front of millions, Jackson received a lot of backlash and Timberlake did not come to her defense, as she felt a friend should.
We haven’t spoken. But I consider him a friend, and I’m very loyal, and friendship is very important to me. He has reached out to speak with me. Like I said, friendship is very important to me – and certain things you just don’t do to friends. And in my own time, I’ll give him a call.

The artist releases her song, 4 Minutes, from her album, Hard Candy. Madonna co-writes the song with Timberlake, Hills and Timbaland.
I really enjoy writing with Justin. We had psychoanalytic sessions whenever we wrote songs first. We’d sit down and we’d start talking about situations. And then we’d start talking about issues or problems or relationships with people. That was the only way, because you know, writing together with somebody is very intimate. That was fun, because he’s open and he’s got talent. He’s a songwriter. I haven’t worked with a lot of songwriters where I’m instantly connected and start riffing and playing with the rhythm of the words. He’s as interested in the rhythm of the words as the meaning of the words.
Timberlake appears on the cover of the March 2009 issue of GQ magazine. He talks about his style icon.
Kate Moss. She looks good in anything. She would look good in one of your T-shirts, in her T-shirt, in a man’s suit, in a huge gown. She looks amazing naked. She even makes nude look stylish. That, to me, is a style icon. She could put a barrel on and it would be some sort of statement.
Timberlake portrays Napster founder Sean Parker in a movie about the creation of Facebook. The film is based on the book The Accidental Billionares. On working with director David Fincher Timberlake says:
He is one of the most brave directors you could ever be lucky enough to work with. But, I’ll say this as well: he does not get bored easily. And when I say easily, I mean at all. Every take he would find something that was so specific. There was no question in your mind what he was trying to get you to accomplish, what he wanted to see through your character. I’ve never seen someone so hyper-smart and multitasking.
Timberlake performs My Love and Sexy Back during the MTV Music Awards to promote Future Sex/Love Sounds.
Timberlake plays a substitute teacher in the comedy film starring alongside Cameron Diaz, Lucy Punch, and Jason Segal. On the song he performs during the movie, Timberlake says:
It’s pretty obvious that I put my body on the line for comedy, so why not my voice? Honestly, the lyrics were the screenwriters’, and I just tried to create the most terrible melody that I could. It had to be so bad that they could not market it in the trailer. It’s really just an extension of the character. It was a total collaboration between me, the writers and the director.
Timberlake plays Dylan in the movie Friends with Benefits alongside co-stars Mila Kunis and Woody Harrelson. After Jamie starts working at a new job, Dylan decides to go after her. He calls Jamie’s mother to set up an excuse to get Jamie to go to Grand Central Station. When the moment comes he tells her how he really feels. After sharing a kiss and a date they decide to have sex without a relationship. .
I keep getting the comment that Mila and I had a lot of chemistry, and we do, but I think you also have to get the rhythm right. They have to be an even match. There’s a way to do naughty. You can do crass if you’re witty at the same time.
Timberlake and Seyfried appear on the cover of the October 2011 issue of W magazine. She talks about sex scenes. Timberlake talks about the audition process.
In films, I didn’t crave the type of attention I had sort of stumbled into in my music career. And I do not audition well. I’m really not good at it. Early on, I did movies like Alpha Dog and Black Snake Moan because the directors didn’t ask me to audition.

Timberlake stars in the lead role of the science fiction film which depicts a world where people must borrow, buy, or steal time in order to live past age 25. In an exclusive interview with Hey U Guys.co.uk, Timberlake talks about the similarities between himself and his character, Will:
I think you always find a little bit of yourself in the characters you play, even if you’re playing the bad guy. No one thinks they’re the bad guys. Everyone wakes up and they’re the lead character in their own movie. I mean, where not like “Oh well, I’m Captain Hook!” We all think we’re Peter Pan!
Timberlake gives an interview to The Talks. He discusses his quarter life crisis and Botox.
It is. From my understanding, they do it so that when they get older it doesn’t look like such a shift. It’s more so that in the future they can hide that they had plastic surgery. They’ll start doing Botox early so that their skin stays tight until they’re 35 and then they’re 40 and then you never question when their skin looks older and then all of a sudden it looks completely different. It’s so that they can hide it more.
Seacrest interviews Timberlake during On Air With Ryan Seacrest and asks him how he courted his fiancée Jessica Biel.
I asked her the old fashioned way—by telephone. I learned from my step-dad and my grandfather that there is this thing called chivalry that didn’t die with the birth of the internet.

Rolling Stone interviews Timberlake about his upcomming album The 20/20 Experiance and why its been so long since he has had an album out.
This is one of those times when stuff gets projected onto you. I would have taken a break regardless of if I would’ve done films or not because my last record was all-consuming and to go on tour like that, for me, I will not be the type of artist that puts out 10 to 15 albums. That’s just not who I am. They’re really special to me. I write music all the time, but until you really feel that desperate need to shout from the rooftops and express yourself in that way, I just kind of keep it to myself. I enjoy making music so much that if it doesn’t come out, that’s okay. If I get to listen to it in my car by myself, I’m just as happy because I get to hear something that I made. I’m not so caught up in the fact that you have to be in the center of attention. For me, when I do have something that I’m ready to express, I’m gonna burrow through whatever to get it heard. But for me, the journey along the way is really the most fun part; it’s not about the outcome. It’s really about making something that feels authentic. That’s the one place you can do that.

Timberlake appears on the cover of the October 2013 issue of T magazine. He talks about not worrying about failure, considering himself a performer, and why he released his album.
If you can answer the question of why you’re doing it, it’s the right thing to do. To answer the question ‘Why?’ for the first time in my career, is: because I wanted to.
Timberlake appears on the cover of the December 2013 issue of GQ magazine. He talks about the negative response of Runner, Runner, not believing he’s a cool guy, and growing up in Memphis.
It’s a struggling city with a defeatist attitude. I’m from this town, and I grew up with a little bit of a chip on my shoulder, so sometimes I find it funny that I’ve been able to acquire the patience it takes to be kind to people in our business. Because sometimes I just want to f–king kill everybody.
