Marie Claire cover
Washington appears on the cover of April 2015 issue of Marie Claire. She talks about fashion, family and privacy.
Earlier in my career I was much more super-sharey. There were moments when I wanted to process things that were happening to me more privately, and I didn’t have the space to do it, because once you let people in, they’re in and you don’t get to say, Oh, I want this for myself.

Washington receives the Vanguard Award for supporting the LGBT community at the 26th edition of the GLAAD Media Awards.
We need more diverse LGBT representation (in the media). And this is big — we need more employment of LGBT people, in front of and behind the camera…We can’t say that we believe in each others fundamental humanity and then turn a blind eye to the reality of each others existence and the truth of each others hearts.
InStyle cover

Women use this ‘guilt’ word a lot, but I’m not sure how I feel about it. I know why it’s the word that keeps coming up, but I can’t co-sign on it yet. There has got to be a better way. You can’t be all things to all people all the time. You have to experience your humanity, you have to know you are a limited vessel, and you can only do so much.
Skin lightening scandal
InStyle responds to fans who believe that Washington’s skin is lightened on her cover photo.
We are super fans of Kerry Washington here at InStyle. To feature her on the cover of our March spring fashion issue is both an honor and a delight. We have heard from those who have spoken out about our newsstand cover photograph, concerned that Kerry’s skin tone was lightened. While we did not digitally lighten Kerry’s skin tone, our cover lighting has likely contributed to this concern. We understand that this has resulted in disappointment and hurt. We are listening, and the feedback has been valuable. We are committed to ensuring that this experience has a positive influence on the ways in which we present all women going forward.

They’re hard to do. Sex scenes are always awkward. You’re doing things that you’re supposed to do with only certain people in your life. Because this is not your real partner in life, doing that is awkward. And then doing it in a room full of people is awkward.

It would involve a lot of wine. I drink maybe twice a year. I would be with my three best friends from high school or my girlfriends from the show.
Emmy nomination
Washington is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress at the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards for portraying Olivia Pope on Scandal.
I found out right before I stepped on a plane, and then [the flight crew] started yelling at me to turn off my phone. My publicist and friend Michelle Benson called me, and then I was able to call my manager and a couple other people — which is why I got in trouble! It’s really exciting. The thing is, to whatever extent anybody is celebrating this character or the portrayal of this character, it really is a celebration of this entire cast, because we are a company of actors that really lean on each other. This work is a reflection of the talent around me, a level of excellence that I am constantly trying to elevate myself to meet.

Yeah, I love that this movie … this year has been so serious with Django and Scandal and I love those roles and those opportunities but it’s great, especially right now, with what’s been going on in the world, it’s so great that this movie gives people a chance to laugh and smile and feel good about life, and about love and family and Craig Robinson.
