Single Release

Jackson releases his version of Smile, a song originally written by Charlie Chaplin for the score of his self-directed 1936 film Modern Times.

You have to have that tragedy, that pain to pull from. That’s what makes a clown great. You can see he’s hurting behind the masquerade. He’s something else externally. Charles Chaplin did that so beautifully, better than anyone. I can play off those moments, too. I’ve been through the fire many times.

Barbara Walters interview

Walters interviews Jackson about his friendship with Princess Diana. He also speaks of his tremendous need for privacy in his life. Jackson also discusses his yearning for a normal life and the way in which the media constantly interferes with him.

Yes … I have been lining that kind of life all my life, the tabloid press, that kind of press, not the press, the tabloids, the paparazzi, that type. I have been runnin’ for my life like that. Running there, let’s go this way, then this way, but they are over there, so we go that way. Somebody needs to say “Hold on, STOP!, this person deserves their privacy, you are not allowed to go there.” I go around the world running and hiding, I can’t take a walk in the park, I cant go to the store, I hide in the room and it feels like prison.

Stranger in Moscow

Single Release

Jackson releases Stranger in Moscow the fifth single from HIStory. The song is an autobiographical look at Jackson’s tour in Moscow where he felt suddenly unknown and disconnected from his fans there.

I wrote that in Moscow. The lyrics are totally autobiographical. When you hear lines like, “Here abondoned in my fame…Armageddon of the brain” -- at the time, on the last tour when we were in Moscow -- that’s how I really felt. It kinda created itself. It fell into my lap, because that’s how I was feeling at the time. Just alone in my hotel and it was raining and I just started writing it.

Japan interview

Jackson is interviewed in Japan during a tour. They talk about his concert experience with the love of his fans in different countries versus others, his apprehension before he goes out on the stage, the premiere of the short film, Ghosts. He also talks about his challenge of the writing positive hopeful songs in a world with so much despair. He starts to laugh hysterically at the weird noises in the background that happen during the interview.

I try to be very positive in my songs when I write them and look at the bright side of things and I’m not totally happy with the situation of the world. But I always try to write something with a positive message in it to convey hope to people to make things better and to not look at the downside all the time.

Yes, I am a workaholic. Uh, I don’t relax really, I don’t sleep a lot, I like to continually… my mind never stops. I’m always creating. I never stop. But, I love a good water balloon fight or you know playing around, goofing off, Nintendo games, arcades.

Jackson, Presley divorce

Presley and Jackson divorce citing irreconcilable differences as the reason. Presley:

I do believe he loved me as much as he could love anyone and I loved him very much … I became very ill and emotionally/spiritually exhausted in my quest to save him from certain self-destructive behavior and from the awful vampires and leeches he would always manage to magnetize around him. I was in over my head while trying … He was an amazing person and I am lucky to have gotten as close to him as I did and to have had the many experiences and years that we had together

Jackson’s Los Angeles publicist, Lee Solters, confirms the separation saying in a statement that the couple had “mutually agreed to go their separate ways. However, they remain good friends.”

That’s my chance to get to really, you know, see them and, feel their presence. When we do a concert, and there’s like a hundred thousand people out there, and you see a sea of people singing there, all in unison, holding up candles, and, you go, wow! You know it’s, it really makes your heart happy and that’s what really makes me feel like everything’s O.K..

My childhood was completely taken away from me. There was no Christmas, no birthdays. It was not a normal childhood, no normal pleasures of childhood. Those were exchanged for hard work, struggle and pain, and eventual material and professional success.

Jackson talks about his obsession with perfection when it comes to creating music, the premiere of Ghosts and the creation of A Stranger in Moscow, the disgust he feels with tabloid media. He also talks about the real Billie Jean and what inspired the song when he was younger while on tour with his brothers.

Some of the songs I remember getting upset with the songwriters because I wanted to sing it one way and they wanted me to sing it another way and I would call Berry Gordy who is the chairman and owner of the company. He would say “Look let Michael do what he wants, I’m sure he’s right.” So that happened several times.

They talk about the alienation from childhood that Jackson felt as a young man who was always working, relationship with his family and time together, Latoya’s book and if any disgust is felt about how she ridiculed the family. They also talk about the awkwardness Jackson felt through adolescence.

That is why I think now, because I didn’t have it then, I compensate for that. People wonder why I always have children around me. I find the thing that I never had through them. You know Disneyland, amusement parks, arcade games. I adore all that stuff because when I was little it was always, work, work, work.

Why do people buy these papers and it’s not the truth? I’m here to say, you know…do not judge a person, do not pass judgement on anyone unless you have talked them one on one. I don’t care what the story is.

That’s one of my dreams but I couldn’t right now because I’m married to my work. I’m married to my music and it has to be that closeness in order to do the kind of work that I wanna do.
