Bans subbreddits
Reddit bans several offensive communities that focus on racist content, such as Coontown, WatchNiggersDie and CoonTownMeta. Subreddits that feature animated” child pornography are also banned. The company also introduces an updated Content Policy that prohibits any posts that are illegal, incites violence, harasses or threatens users or includes sexually explicit content taken without the person’s permission. Offensive communities that don’t necessarily break these rules but are nonetheless considered profane or “upsetting” may now be “quarantined,” meaning users have to opt in to see the content. Some may also have NSFW tag. CEO Huffman’s official statement:
Our most important policy over the last ten years has been to allow just about anything so long as it does not prevent others from enjoying Reddit for what it is: the best place online to have truly authentic conversations. I believe these policies strike the right balance.
Huffman’s later comment:
We didn’t ban them because we disagree with them. We banned them because this exist solely to annoy other redditors, prevent us from improving Reddit, and generally make Reddit worse for everyone else.
Now everybody, not only trolls, is mad at Reddit. This might be a great chance for new sites to shine.
There were many concerns regarding censorship in Reddit community. The recent censorship, a really bold step, just confirms that Reddit is not a place for free speech anymore – as confirmed by CEO of Reddit.
I believe that this thing is absurdly overblown, there will never be a single place that everyone can go to with 100% freedom of speech, it just doesn’t work.
I don’t trust reddit…otherwise this would be a big deal.
You cant defeat its bad with good. Reddit is what Reddit is. A place for people on the internet to express their views and themselves whether bad or good.
I just joined Reddit today and from the things people are saying I think Reddit won’t last much longer.
Reddit will go the way of Digg shortly.
People should move to a new site and tell reddit to go F themselves.
I wonder how many people are going to cry that their freedom of speech is being eroded? Reddit has every right to do what their doing. While you do have freedom of speech, they have the right to take what they want from their site.
