Deschanel stars in the sitcom New Girl on the Fox network. She plays Jessica Day, a quirky but passionate school teacher who moves to a loft with three guys after being dumped by her boyfriend. Co-starring Jake Max Greenfield, Jake Johnson, Damon Wayans, Jr., and Hannah Simone.
It’s easy to say [the show is about] a girl and three guys, but obviously with any plot, you can boil it down into something that sounds generic. I have a lot of guy friends, and they help me in different ways. But it’s less about her, as these men have their issues.
Yes Man
Deschanel stars in this British-American film adaptation of the Danny Wallace novel of the same name. She plays Allison, the eccentric love interest of Jim Carrey’s character named Carl, a man who decides to just say “yes” to everything. The film also stars Terence Stamp, Bradley Cooper, and Danny Masterson. On making the songs in the movie:
It wasn’t so hard. Yeah, I mean, I’m in a band myself and I write music and I do go to see shows a lot and so it wasn’t really that, I don’t know, it wasn’t too much of stretch for me.
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Deschanel stars in this western drama film adaptation of the Ron Hansen novel of the same name. She plays Dorothy Evans, a young woman who serves as Robert Ford’s confidante during the final months of his life. Jesse James and Robert Ford are played by Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck. The film also stars Sam Shepard, Mary-Louise Parker, and Jeremy Renner.
Failure to Launch
Deschanel stars in this romantic comedy about a professional motivator, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, who tries to get a carefree bachelor, played by Matthew McConaughey, out of his parents’ house. The actress plays the role of Parker’s cynical and eccentric roommate. Also starring Kathy Bates, Terry Bradshaw, and Bradley Cooper.
It was always a party… always. He (Matthew) made, like, a dinner for us, he had us all for dinner one night, it was really, really nice. And he’s such a good storyteller, he was like, making a salad and telling stories.
Elf
Deschanel stars in this Christmas comedy film directed by Jon Favreau. She plays Jovie, a jaded department store clerk who does not feel the Christmas spirit. Her enthusiasm for the holidays is restored when she meets Buddy, a North Pole elf played by Will Ferrell. With James Caan, Mary Steenburgen, and Bob Newhart. On her favorite scene:
It was fun when we were in the department store because there were all these weird toys everywhere – little kid guitars, little stuffed animals, and just weird stuff. We had fun there.
Almost Famous
Deschanel stars in her breakout role in this Cameron Crowe comedy-drama film. Her character’s name is Anita Miller, the free-spirited and rock music-loving older sister of the protagonist William, played by Patrick Fugit. She is constantly at odds with her mother, played by Francis McDormand, and leaves home to become a flight stewardess. The film also stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, Billy Crudup, and Kate Hudson. On being cast in the film:
That’s an interesting story. Almost Famous was my second movie. I had done my first movie, which was Mumford (1999), my senior year of high school. And I missed my last month of school to do it. So I was corresponding with my teachers and doing my term papers. I was in all honors classes so it was like this big deal to leave school.
