Startups are counterintuitive

Gives Talk0 Comments

Graham says in Lecture 3 of the Stanford course that startups are counterintuitive in many ways, including that many founders don’t know the mechanics of investing or fund raising. He says founders also can’t game the system:

They always want to know, since apparently the measure of success for a startup is fundraising, another noob mistake. They always want to know, what are the tricks for convincing investors? And we have to tell them the best way to convince investors is to start a startup that is actually doing well, meaning growing fast, and then simply tell investors so.

I get to communicate with a lot of young people, I get to meet with a lot of college students and a lot of high school kids, and I can tell you that after voting for this President twice there is a lot of… they are reconsidering their decision in more ways than one. And it’s up to us to paint an alternative and be able to construct a vision for them to plug into.

Film Appearance0 Comments

Pike stars as Abi in the comedy directed by Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin, based on the BBC show Outnumbered. Abi and her husband, Doug (David Tennant), hide the tension in their marriage as they travel to the Scottish Highlands to meet Doug’s terminally ill father, Gordie (Billy Connolly). As they focus on their marital troubles, their daughter fulfills a bizarre dying wish by Gordie and forces them to confront their issues. Co-starring Ben Miller and Emilia Jones.

When I read What We Did On Our Holiday I just thought, this is brilliant. I knew that these guys, Andy and Guy, have such an indelible sense of good taste, great sense of humor and just this really original way of working.

In the thriller based on the novel written by Gillian Flynn and directed by David Fincher, Pike plays the role of Amy, a missing woman suspected to have been murdered by her husband. Co-starring Ben Affleck and Neil Patrick Harris.

There were definitely moments when I felt very uneasy with how much power Amy had. And the interesting thing is, my reaction was to laugh, to get sort of uncontrollable giggles. That was the most curious part of playing her: At the point where she’s at her most powerful, it unnerved something in me.

In the thriller based on the novel written by Gillian Flynn and directed by David Fincher, Affleck plays the role of Nick Dunne, a man with questionable morals accused of murdering his wife.  Co-starring Rosamund Pike and Neil Patrick Harris.

There’s nothing really about this guy or character that I feel connected to personally, except that I have definitely felt as though I was looking at a version of my life that I didn’t recognize through the prism of the media.

Calls Trump bully

TV Appearance0 Comments

O’Donnell says Trump has bullied her over the course of years:

I made fun of him on The View, which was the show we were supposed to do, talk about politics, talk about pop culture. And I made fun of him. And it seemed to upset him in a very, very intense way. He’s held on to it since 2006. And he has said horrible things about me every chance he gets. Probably the Trump stuff was the most bullying I ever experienced in my life, including as a child. It was national, and it was sanctioned societally. Whether I deserved it is up to your own interpretation.
