Runaway

The band releasesRunaway, from their self titled album. Bon Jovi about the video:

I hate videos. If you wanted to torture me you’d tie me down and force me to watch our first five videos. Five times you’re chump before you learn what you’re doing. The first time we’d just made a record and we were all excited and some a–hole decides we’re going to make a video for Runaway. So instead of making it about what the song’s about, he decides to put a concept to it with his little niece in it. It’s the worst piece of s–t I ever saw in my life. There’s a girl with like fire coming out of her eyes. They dressed the band. Richie’s wearing a jumpsuit and shoes that are three sizes too big. They kept squirting us down with this greasy solution to make it look like we were sweating. We all look like assholes.

Undercover Of The Night

The band releases their song, Undercover Of The Night, from the album, Undercover. Jagger:

I’m not saying I nicked it, but this song was heavily influenced by William Burroughs’ Cities Of The Red Night, a free-wheeling novel about political and sexual repression. It combines a number of different references to what was going down in Argentina and Chile. I think it’s really good but it wasn’t particularly successful at the time because songs that deal overtly with politics never are that successful, for some reason.

The artist releases Lucky Star. The song is featured on her self-titled album. MTV’s Ayeroff commissions the video for the single.

I made Lucky Star for $14,000 with a friend who was a pot grower from Bolinas, California (Arthur Pierson). We’d released ; Everybody, Burning Up, Holiday and Borderline as singles. And Madonna didn’t want to release Lucky Star. Around the same time, she was getting sued and needed money. I said, ‘Let me release Lucky Star, and I guarantee you’ll sell enough records to pay that off.’ Lucky Star broke the first album wide open.

Beat It

Jackson releases Beat It, the third single from Thriller. The lyrics portray gang life on the streets which Jackson has mentioned he is not directly familiar with. The song talks about two gangs who come together to fight but are challenged to work together and settle their differences in peaceful manner.

Every song is different. The gestation process for BEAT IT was so fast, it was amazing. I thought about what I’d do in that situation… A confrontation with a gang… I wouldn’t do what these people would do. The way I was raised I would turn the other cheek without creating a war or being a coward either.

Billie Jean

Jackson releases Billie Jean, the second single from Thriller. The song is based on a true account where a girl would stalk Jackson and begin writing him letters claiming he was the father of her child. Jackson expressed is discomfort with the false claim indirectly with this song.

There is a girl named Billie Jean, but it’s not about that Billie Jean, Billie Jean is kind of anonymous. It represents a lot of girls. They used to call them groupies in the ’60s. They would hang around backstage doors, and any band that would come to town they would have a relationship with, and I think I wrote this out of experience with my brothers when I was little. There were a lot of Billie Jeans out there. Every girl claimed that their son was related to one of my brothers.
