Project Loon

Google launches Project Loon, whose goal is to provide internet access to rural and remote areas. An additional project goal is to improve communication during natural disasters. Google names it Project Loon because of its far-out mission objectives. The project places balloons in the stratosphere to create a wireless network system that has speeds up to 3-G. The internet signal will travel between the various balloons then connect to a station on the ground to connect to the internet. The balloons launch in a rural area in New Zealand, which can provide service for an area twice the size of New York City. If successful, the project will expand to globally.
