In the first League Cup final sponsored by Rumbelows, Sheffield Wednesday upset Manchester United in front of 77,612 fans at Wembley. John Sheridan’s goal gives Wednesday a double of the League Cup and promotion back to the top flight.
Nottingham Forest 1-0 Oldham
A goal by Nigel Jemson gives Forest a 1-0 victory and their 4th League Cup, tying with Liverpool for the most wins in the competition. The 30th League Cup Final is watched by a crowd of 74,343 at Wembley Stadium.
Nottingham Forest 3-1 Luton Town
Holders Luton return to the scene of their epic 1989 League Cup win over Arsenal but cannot repeat the feat as Forest claim the trophy for the third time. Two goals from Nigel Clough and one from Nigel Webb see Forest overturn a halftime deficit to run out 3-1 winners in front of just 76,130 at Wembley.
Luton Town 3-2 Arsenal
Luton stun the football world as they defeat favourites Arsenal 3-2 with a last minute winner from Brian Stein. A Wembley crowd of 95,732 see the Hatters lift their first ever major trophy.
Arsenal 2-1 Liverpool
Two goals from Charlie Nicholas give the Gunners their first ever League Cup in front of 96,000 at Wembley. Ian Rush nets a consolation for the Merseysiders who fail to lift the trophy for a 5th time.
Oxford United 3 – 0 QPR
Oxford United wins their first major trophy with a 3-0 success over QPR. Goals from Hebberd, Houghton & Charles give the U’s their greatest day in front of 90,396 at Wembley.
Norwich City 1-0 Sunderland
Norwich City win their second League Cup at the expense of Sunderland. The game is historic as the tie is the first to be decided by an own goal – Gordon Chisholm, the unlucky Wearsider. Both clubs are relegated to Division 2 at the end of the season.
Liverpool 1-0 Everton (Replay after 0-0)
Liverpool win the League Cup for an incredible 4th year running. Again, a replay is required after a 0-0 draw at Wembley. Graeme Souness nets the winner in front of 52,089 at Maine Road, Manchester.
Liverpool 2-1 Man Utd
Liverpool win their third consecutive League Cup – again coming from behind as Kennedy equalises Norman Whiteside’s opener for United. The hero for the Merseysiders is once again Ronnie Whelan, who scores the winner in extra time in front of 99,304 spectators at Wembley.
Liverpool 3-1 Spurs (aet)
Spurs come agonisingly close to winning their third League Cup after an 11th minute opportunist strike from Steve Archibald. A Ronnie Whelan strike in the 87th minute forces extra time, during which Whelan gets his second and Ian Rush seals the victory for the Reds.
Liverpool 2-1 West Ham (Replay after 1-1)
In the third League Cup Final in five years to need a replay, Liverpool win the trophy for the first time. After a 1-1 draw at Wembley, a crowd of 36,693 see goals from KennyDalglish and Alan Hansen clinch the trophy for the Merseysiders at Villa Park.
Wolves 1-0 Nottingham Forest
Forest, appearing in their third consecutive League Cup Final, fall to an Andy Gray strike in the 67th minute. Wolves secure their second League Cup triumph in a stunning upset over the reigning European Cup holders.
Nottingham Forest 3-2 Southampton
Southampton appear in their first League Cup Final but fail to stop Forest becoming the first team to win the trophy two years running. A Wembley crowd of 96,952 sees Birtles score twice for the champions. Woodcock also nets for Forest to counter strikes from Peach and Holmes for the Saints.

The League Cup final goes to a replay for the second year running after a goalless draw at Wembley. Forest win the replay at Old Trafford thanks to a controversial John Robertson penalty. TV replays show that the foul occurred outside the penalty area. A crowd of 54,375 see Forest become the first team to win the League and League Cup double.
Aston Villa 3-2 Everton (aet) (2nd Replay after 0-0, 1-1)
Aston Villa win their third League Cup in their fifth final. It takes three games and two periods of extra time to seperate the teams. The first tie at Wembley ends 0-0. The first replay at Hillsborough is a 1-1 stalemate after extra time. Villa finally triumph in the second replay in front of 54,749 at Old Trafford thanks to two goals from Brian Little and a 40 yard thunderbolt from Chris Nicholl.
Man City 2-1 Newcastle United
Barnes and Gowling net in the first half before a stunning overhead kick from Dennis Tueart secures a 2-1 win for City to give them their second League Cup triumph in what is their third final in seven years.

Two teams from outside the first division contest a Wembley Cup Final for the first time. Ray Graydon nets the winner as 95,946 see Aston Villa win their second League Cup, having won the inaugural trophy in 1961.
