Cruise plays Ethan Hunt in this thriller, directed by J.J. Abrams. Hunt has to stop a villain who possesses a deadly virus that causes death 24 hours after exposure. Hunt is engaged to a  nurse named Julia, who thinks he is a highway traffic control engineer. But once she is captured, Ethan must put himself in jeopardy and release the “Rabbit’s Foot” to the villain. Co-starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames and Michelle Monaghan.

I really wanted this one to be more personal. When I started Mission: Impossible, I had never done sequels. But with this, there’s always the potential of a new adventure to go on. I’m fascinated by this genre. And when J.J. Abrams came on board, I was so excited, because I had seen his work before. Here’s this filmmaker who also loves this genre, knows it better than anyone, and has this incredibly unique voice. He can tell a story in the way of the great pulps of the Twenties and Thirties. Very tight, layered, relevant and resonant, but not pretentious.

Cruise plays Ray Ferrier, a divorced dockworker and less-than-perfect father in this adaptation of H.G Wells science-fiction novel, directed by Stephen Spielberg. When his ex-wife and her new husband drop off his teenage son, Robbie, and young daughter Rachel for a rare weekend visit, a strange and powerful lightning storm suddenly touches down, followed by an alien invasion. Co-starring Dakota Fanning, Justin Chatwin, Miranda Otto and Tim Robbins.

It describes the feeling about life all over the world. We live in a world in which we are able to communicate very quickly in many different ways, and yet we find communicating more difficult than ever. When in fact we need communication more urgently than ever, because the enemies that threaten us are universal: drugs, illiteracy and crime. We have to fight against them together. The film is a metaphor for that battle.

It was different. I always look for a challenge and something that’s different. This definitely had every element and promise of being that. I wanted to work with Michael Mann and these guys, Jada and Jamie. It was very challenging, really challenging.

Cruise plays disillusioned and alcoholic Civil War veteran, Captain Nathan Algren, who accepts an assignment to go to Japan and train the Imperial army.  The army is called into battle before they are ready and Algren is captured by samurai who take him back to their village as a prisoner.  Once there he is allowed to roam freely and, over time, begins to integrate into their society and learn the way of the samurai.  After learning of a coming attack, Algren takes up arms to help his captures and fight off the Imperial army in a valiant battle. Also starring Ken Watanabe. Directed by Ed Zwick.

For me as a man, philosophically, when you talk about honor and integrity, that’s the way I want to live my life. It moved me. And also I’m just fascinated with their culture and this gave me the opportunity to explore it and to honor the things that I love most about their culture. And to work with Ed Zwick; it’s a very ambitious film. How can you say no to that?

Tom Cruise stars as John Anderton, a Washington, D.C. detective in this sci-fi thriller set in 2054. Anderton works for “Precrime,” a special unit of the police department that arrests murderers before they have committed crime. When Anderton discovers that he has been identified as the future killer of a man he’s never met, he is forced to become a fugitive from his own colleagues as he tries to uncover the the victim-to-be’s identity. When he kidnaps Agatha (Samantha Morton), one of the precogs, he begins to formulate a theory about a possible frame-up from within his own department. Directed by Steven Spielberg. Co-starring Colin Farrell, Max von Sydow, and Neal McDonough.

I thought when I read it and then read the short story it had great potential–very cinematic. I thought, “Oh, man I’d love to see what [he’d do] with this. What would this world be like? What will he create with that?” It was a film that for a director was very challenging. You’re creating this world, and yet it has great characters for an actor, for performance…it’s not a walk-in-the-park kind of film to make. Spielberg knows how to tell a story. It was his choice to [set] it in 2054 and make it so that people could identify with it–not this removed world, but relevant to our lives. You can see how the guy can just really tell a story.

Tom Cruise stars as David Ames, a womanizing playboy who falls in love with his best friend’s girlfriend Sofia. Before that relationship can begin, however, David is coaxed into a car driven by an ex-lover, Julie, who turns out to be suicidal. Driving her car off a bridge, Julie kills herself and horribly disfigures David. Reconstructive surgery and the loving support of Sofia seem to reverse David’s luck, but eerie incidents are soon making him question the reality of his existence and his control over his life, even while he is suspected of complicity in Julie’s death. Co-starring Penelope Cruz and Cameron Diaz.

As a thriller, [Sky] has all of Cameron Crowe’s ideas in it, and the questions and the things that I find interesting. You can have that ride, the pop culture ride, but underneath there’s some things you can walk away with and a film that you might want to see before dinner so you can sit down and talk about it.

Cruise plays Dr. Bill Hartford in this erotic thriller by Stanley Kubrick.  When Dr. Hartford discovers his wife’s sexual fantasies, he sets out on a quest to quench his own desires.  He finds himself skirting the edges of an elite secret society that wishes to remain that way. After many close calls, and disturbing situations he finally abandons his quest and confesses himself to his wife.  Co-starring Nicole Kidman as Alice Hartford and Sydney Pollack and LeeLee Sobieski

People thought that making the film was the beginning of the end of my marriage, but I don’t really think it was. Tom and I were close then, and it was very much the three of us. Onscreen, the husband and wife are at odds, and Stanley wanted to use our marriage as a supposed reality. That was Stanley: He used the movie as provocation, pretending it was our sex life — which we weren’t oblivious to, but obviously it wasn’t us. We both decided to dedicate ourselves to a great filmmaker and artist.

I like watching sports, but I’m not interested in making a movie about sports. You could have taken this guy and put him in any field. I like the people in it. I like the relationship with the girl. There are so many levels to this.

I couldn’t wait to play that courtroom scene in A Few Good Men with Jack Nicholson. I’d been thinking about it for months. And it was like, here it is, man, I’m going to enjoy every moment of this…People came from all around just to watch us play that scene. They were showing up along the edges! So many people. And when the scene ended the first time, there was applause. Everyone around, applauding. God, it was exciting. It was electric.

Cruise plays Cole Trickle, an up and coming NASCAR racer in this car racing drama directed by Tony Scott. Trickle wants to win the Indianapolis 500 but faces obstacles, including lack of a proper car. A twist of fate allows him the opportunity to compete at the top level. The character of Cole is largely based off of real race car driver, Dale Earnhardt. Co-starring Nicole Kidman, Robert Duvall, Randy Quaid and Cary Elwes.

The characters are really well developed and it reaches all different levels of what I feel of American culture…To me, racing, there’s something very heroic about the drivers. Almost like modern day gladiators.
