Location-sensitive security patent
0 CommentsApple files a patent titled Location-Sensitive Security Levels and Setting Profiles Based on Detected Location. The patent involves having a device detect its location and which security measures are appropriate for the situation:
Because some locations may be inherently more secure, such as a user’s home or office, these locations may be considered ‘safe’ and require less stringent security. It can be desirable to have decreased security requirements when the mobile device is at a secure location. Conversely, some locations may be considered higher risk or ‘unsecure.’

0 CommentsThe highest court in the European Union rules that the characteristic layout of the Apple Store can be registered as a trademark. This reverses a lower court’s ruling to reject the trademark:
The Court takes the view in this respect that a representation that, such as the one in the present case, depicts the layout of a retail store by means of an integral collection of lines, curves and shapes, may constitute a trade mark provided that it is capable of distinguishing the goods or services of one undertaking from those of other undertakings.

No leak from Apple
0 CommentsThe FBI and Apple are investigating allegations from the accounts of a number of celebrities, including Jennifer Lawrence and Kate Upton, were hacked.
After more than 40 hours of investigation, we have discovered that certain celebrity accounts were compromised by a very targeted attack on user names, passwords and security questions, a practice that has become all too common on the Internet. None of the cases we have investigated has resulted from any breach in any of Apple’s systems including iCloud or Find my iPhone. We are continuing to work with law enforcement to help identify the criminals involved.
When we learned of the theft, we were outraged and immediately mobilized Apple’s engineers to discover the source, our customers’ privacy and security are of utmost importance to us.

Additionally, Apple will also use “two–factor” authentication on a wider scale, which asks for two of three things: a password, an access key provided when one first signs up for the service, or a separate onetime code. Cook:
When I step back from this terrible scenario that happened and say what more could we have done, I think about the awareness piece. I think we have a responsibility to ratchet that up. That’s not really an engineering thing.
